« on: Thursday 16 February 06 14:01 GMT (UK) »
Hi all ,   This may sound like a strange question , but is there some sort of register for will's - how would i know if any of my ancester's left one ? and also the NATIONAL BURIEL INDEX , IS THIS SOMETHING YOU CAN PURCHASE ? does each county have one ?
sorry if these sound like daft question's , but would like to know if any of my ancester's left will's and whom they left what to .

Hi gah!

Don't know if this will work - but worth a try !! just try plugging in the surname first!

if it doesn't - you might have to go through the records office in the county

Hi gah,

The National Burial Index is on its second edition and is a long way from complete.  Some counties have not contributed to it, having published their own.  It is available to purchase from the FFHS:

http://www.ffhs.org.uk/General/Projects/NBI.htm

Many of the entries are available to view (for a few pennies) at:

http://www.familyhistoryonline.org.uk

You need to be aware that it only covers England and Wales.

Wills can be found in various county records offices or at the National Archives.  It depends which ecclesiatical court proved them.  Have a look at this link:
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/Probate.html

PCC wills (Prerogative Court of Canterbury) are available from the National Archives (up to 1858):

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/wills.asp

Each will is available in pdf format to download at a cost of £3.50.

Hope that goes some way to answering your questions.

Nell
