Powell Family from Llanelli
« on: Monday 19 August 13 14:10 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help please?

I am trying to find out some information on the Powells from Llanelli,

Walter M Powell born in Devynock, Brecon 1832,
Maria (Mary) Powell (nee Malyn- family moved from England to Abergwilli Carmarthen born 1831/32 in Middx

Children:-
All born in LLanelli
Sophia Powell born 1858
Walter M Powell born 1863
Henry G Powell born 1867

Walter (father) profession is listed as a accountant, if there anyway of finding out where he worked? The family is living in the Mount Pleasant area of Llanelli, where would that have been?

I know about the two sons but I know nothing about Sophia, the last listing is in 1891 she is now living in St Ismael and her profession is a dressmaker. She must have married, as I cannot find a death.

Hello Karen  :)

Welcome to Rootschat!

Capel Newydd Methodist Chapel is in the Mount Pleasant area of Llanelli. It is just off Felinfoel road, and there is a pub called "The Mount Pleasant" on Felinfoel road.

Kind Regards
Morgan

Morgan,

Many thanks for the photo of the chapel, how did you manage to find that entry for Sophia?

If she did marry as I cannot find a death record, which is the best way of finding her new name?

Her parents Walter Morgan and Maria must be buried in Llanelli, which is the best way to find out where they are buried?

Thanks,
Karen

Hello  :)

I went through all the people around the right age living in Ferryside to find Sophia! You could try the same thing to try to find her in 1911 census, and then look for marriages or deaths later than that if you find her.

Looks as if Walter died in 1879 (Llanelli 11a 341), and Maria died in 1887 (Llanelli 11a 419)

I have found an entry in the burial register for Walter Powell, of Mount Pleasant, age 45, buried on 31st August 1879, at Holy Trinity Church, Felinfoel, Llanelli. Maria Powell, age 50, of Llanelli, was buried at the same Chuch on 1st August 1887.

Kind Regards
Morgan

There is a marriage in Carmarthen district in 1913 of Sophia Powell to John Thomas (Carmarthen 11a 2512) but if you decide to send for the certificate, specify that the Bride's father's name is Walter Powell and Bride is likely to live in Ferryside.

There is also a death of a Sophia Powell in Carmarthen district in 1933, but she's only 55 so a slim possibility. Of course, the informant may not have known Sophia's age, and she did get younger between 1891 and 1901!  :D

Another possibility is that Sophia moved away from the area, but anyway we would not be able to find her on electoral rolls before 1928.

Morgan,

Once again many thanks for all the information. I shall be busy on my next visit to Llanelli and now I can search the graveyard in St Trinity for the grave of Walter and Maria.

I shall take your advice and possibly obtain the marriage cert for Sophia and check the 1911 census.

Kind regards,
Karen
