Leslie Arthur Hearn served in India
« on: Monday 20 February 12 17:23 GMT (UK) »
Leslie Arthur Hearn  aged 39 returned from Calcutta in 1933 with wife and son and his trade was Engineer.
It is believed that he was a Captain in the Indian Army but regiment not known... but he possibly was in a Surrey Reg.
Not much information to go on but anything at all would be appreciated as the only certain thing we know is that shown in the shipping list

Thank you forrester,
I hadn't seen the NA item but I have seen that medal card on Ancestry and it gives an address in 1922 as Upper Lodge, Bushey Park, Hampton Hill, Middlesex.... this may be the man .
There is however a Leslie Artur Hearn age 27 who marries Helen Leahy Blackwell Clifford on 29 March 1921 at Jamalpur, Bengal.. the bride was a divorcee and her father was Templeton Blacwood...
and when my Leslie Arthur Hearn arrived from Calcutta in 1933 his wife was Yvonne Bridget...
Never sure that they were the same person but a Leslie Arthur Hearn was buried 17 April 1937 age 43 in Patna, Bengal so he may have gone back to India or perhaps there was another Leslie Arthur Hearn

There are at least two officers of that name. Below is a link to a London Gazette search on L. A. Hearn, which produces eight hits. You should be able to map the seperate careers out. One is certainly the man whose MIC I linked to earlier. Another is definitely Indian Army Reserve of Officers.

Thanks again,
I am not  familiar with promotions in the army but am I right in thinking that this is the same man.. he resigns 9 Aug 1922 recieving a gratuity then on 16 March 1923 is an Indian Army Reserve Officer promoted from Lt. to Captain..

They are two different men and possibly three, on looking closer.

These entries are for the man whose index card I linked to earlier (Devonshire Regiment and RFA, plus 4th Hussars later), but may include another L A Hearn, 4th Battalion Devonshire Regiment:

These are for the IARO man:

If you are lucky, I may have managed to sort them into date order.

Hello again,
The story is that Leslie Arthur Hearn was a Captain in the Indian Army.. he returned  from India with his wife and child in 1933 and lived in Caterham Surrey... his wife died and he left leaving the boy with a neighbour who looked after him.. it is believed that Leslie Arthur died and that an aunt arrived at the home of the boy and took him away..
I have information about his descendants but know only the above about Leslie Arthur .. it would appear that he is the one in the Indiand Reserve....
I could not seperate the two Leslie A Hearns until your last response
Cheers
Colin

On 6th July 1934 a Leslie Hearn, engineer, went on the ship Corfu to Bombay.  His address was in Standerstead (could be Sanderstead) Road Caterham
