Date please for George :)
« on: Sunday 23 November 14 18:10 GMT (UK) »
:)Can anyone date this please. Would the clothes that the children are wearing be popular among the people who lived in the countryside or dwellers from the towns. Also was it common for a photo to be taken without the mother?I'm also thinking that the clothes could have been hired from the photographer at the time.

No help with dating, I'm afraid, you will get more expert answers.

But a lovely photo and I just wanted to say that they certainly bought that jacket for the left hand little boy for him to grow into, didn't they  ;)

Why are all the best photos date only?   :'( :'( :'( :'(   I couldn't help it, I had to have a play.  Just disregard if not wanted.

I'm guessing you don't know their identity to verify if the mother was alive?  I have to say I haven't seen that many photos with the mother absent, usually the other way around that is, mother and children, no father.  One identifying feature I don't know if you have noticed is the cleft chin on the father which is an inherited trait.

Is there anything on the back of the photo that could help with a date?

Sorry I haven't been much help but I'm sure those that know what they are talking about will be along later.  :)

The first thing noticeable about this is that it was taken outdoors but has an interior backdrop.
Taken by one of the growing number of " Electric & Daylight Studios" that became popular in the 1890's.
It would help if we knew what we were looking at.
Is it in an album?
Is this the photo mount we can just see?
What size is it?
Is it a cabinet card or postcard?
As for a date the starting point would be 1890's but could be into the mid Edwardian period.
When dressed in Sunday best as these are there's no distinction on where they would have lived.
Photographer's didn't have dressing up boxes, sitters wore their own clothes.

Thank you Caroline those are amazing. :)

I thought that this photo had been lost as I had not seen it for over 20 yrs, my sister had taken it with her when she moved home years ago. The photo is mounted on a greyish blue card and I remember when it was all intact, it was in three sections witch all folded together and it was used as a stand (is that what you mean by a cabinet card). My dad told me it was a relative on his side of the family and I thought that it could be his grandad on the right, but he was born in 1877 his younger brother b 1879 and his sister b1880. The photo is 7 inches by 4 inches.

7 X 4 is too big for a cabinet card so Edwardian.
The baby could be a boy or a girl as they were dressed the same.
