Hi,

My 2x Great Grandfather Joseph Jardine, born 10 October 1855 in County Down, emigrated to South Africa in 1858 with his parents Henry and Margaret and siblings James, Margaret, John, Bessy and Mary. Their voyage was paid for by a John Jardine, perhaps the same one that paid for the McCulloughs voyage?
I was wondering if you had any knowledge of my line of Jardines?
Joseph went on to own the farm Calderwood in Boston, Natal.
He died 2 February 1934.

http://www.calderwood.co.za/history.html

Joseph's daughter Beatrice married Stace Phipson and they had a farm/s in Mid Illovo, so they may have been acquaintances of Alexander and his family.

Best regards,
Darren Baudin

Hi Darren

Thanks so much for that link to Calderwood - very interesting to read.

Mary McCulloch, John Jardine (married Mary Emma WILKINSON in SA) & Henry Jardine were, infact, siblings. They also had a sister, Margaret (married David ROSS in SA). Margaret & John traveled to South Africa in 1853 as part of the Byrne Settler Immigration Scheme. John then stood surety for both Henry and Mary's families to travel to SA in 1858.

Henry and his family settled in Mid Illovo for a while, on a farm called "Fairfield", which was later taken over by their youngest son, Samuel - born in South Africa.

Although Henry has a gravestone in the Pietermarizburg Commercial Rd Cemetery, he actually died back in Ireland and is buried in the Garvaghy Parish Graveyard. According to his death certificate, he died in a place called Newcastle in Kilkeel, Ireland on the 23rd of September 1893. I'm still trying to find out what made him go back. Incidentally he was also born in Newcastle (so were John and Margaret), so that may be the place to start in tracing the JARDINE family further back.
Mary, John & Henry's parents were James JARDINE & Elizabeth ALLEN (listed on Mary's death notice.

Henry's wife's full name was Elizabeth Margaret McEWAN,
& his children were as follows:

*James (b.3 Sept 1845 & d. 12 Mar 1918) - unmarried
He is buried in the Pietermaritzburg Commercial Rd Cemetary

*Margaret (d. 1946)
Her married name was SEWELL

*John (b. Fedany, Ireland & d. 18 October 1930
He married Margaret Isabella McDonald in Cape Town, South Africa

*Elisabeth Jane or Bessie (d.1921)
She married Martin Oscar SAHLSTROM on 26 Sept 1889

*Joseph (d. 2 Feb 1934)
He married Edith Emily Wellingtom LOWE

*Mary (d.4 October 1897)
She married John Stevenson PINKNEY & is burried in the Mid Illovo Cemetery

*Samuel (b. "Fairfield, Mid Illovo & d.29 Sept 1895) - unmarried

*Isabella (b. Mid Illovo & d. 15 February 1877) - unmarried

All this info I have gained from documents (of which I have copies) in the Pietermaritzurg archives, and have plenty more on some of Henry's decendents.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can help with.

Regards
Jessie

Hi Jessie,

Thanks for this wealth of information.

I've been wondering about Joseph's origins for ages and this provides a real insight.

I'll be in touch if I need anything.

And please feel free to pick my brain if there is anything you might like to know about my line of Jardines.

I have attached a pic of the wedding of Francis Jardine, Joseph's daughter, Joseph is seated on the far left.

Best,

Darren

Hi Robert,
Lovely to make your acquaintance.
Would that make Mary McCullough (nee Jardine) your great grandmother?
Mary's brother Henry Jardine was my great great great grandfather.
Would you have known my great grandparents Stace and Beatrice Phipson? They also farmed at Mid-Illovo on Avondale and Runnymede if I'm not mistaken. Or perhaps you knew my grandmother Unis Phipson, or her siblings, Muriel, Desmond or Gifford?
I would love to hear from you, my email address is djbaudin@gmail.com
Kind regards,
Darren Baudin
