My great grandmother Scott taken in George, South Africa (I think)
« on: Tuesday 29 July 14 14:13 BST (UK) »
Hi,
The attached photo is of my GGrandmother who was born in the George area of South africa in 1844 and died there in 1924.  Her father was Scottish who came out to South Africa and married a local girl and settled in the area.  I would love to know the date of this photo together with any information about the clothing style and whether it would be what the local woman would be wearing in South Africa at that time or whether this would have come from the UK.  Based on her death date I imagine this was taken in the early 20th century.

Thanks
Jenny

Hi Jenny....This could be 1880s but this will bring it back up the board for other opinions.

Thanks Di and Carol

I have to admit I don't think I have ever seen a hat more hideous than the one she is wearing.

And yet . . . .  it could be the hat which is going to be the main clue to the age of the photo!      ;D

Looking at the ladies face I would say she was in her forties, putting the period in the late 80's or early 90's, but what the well dressed lady wore in those days in England is a mystery to me, let alone South Africa.

You certainly have a wide range of dates for this but all wrong I'm afraid.. sorry folks.
Your first thought was the right one, Edwardian & probably early-mid decade.
A woman's "Sunday best" in S.A. would be the same as any other woman's in the Empire.

Thanks everyone for your input.  Jim I googled Edwardian hats and I now know there are far worse creations than my ancestor's hat - Mind-boggling!
