Elizabeth Bannon
« on: Saturday 13 April 13 14:28 BST (UK) »
Hi
I am trying to find any information on the parents of my great grandmother Elizabeth Bannon.
She married my great grandfather in Dublin in 1888.On the church record of the marriage her surname was given as Murphy. The civil record  states she was a widow.I have not been able to find her previous marriage.
The church record names her parents as John Bannon and B.T Walsh  and were deceased in 1888.
On the 1901 census Elizabeth gives her age as 40 and birthplace as Co. Kildare
The 1911 census gives her age as 60 and birthplace as Co. Kildare
She died in 1931 in Dublin aged 79 so I think her birth was around 1850-1853.
Any information or advice on tracing her family in Kildare would be appreciated.

What was listed as John's occupation on the civil cert ?

Griffith's and/or the Tithes might give you possible locations and parishes to search...

Did any other Bannons show up as witnesses or godparents that might give clues ?

There's a John Bannon listed in Co. Kildare on Griffiths in the townland of Plunketstown Lower. He is listed with a little over 29 acres of land, but no house mentioned, so possibly lives somewhere else.

The location is near Castledermot and very close to the borders of Counties Wicklow and Carlow.

Hi
John Bannons occupation was listed as Labourer
There were no Bannons listed on the marriage record as witnesses and none listed as godparents on the baptismal records for Elizabeths two children.
The only record were the surname is mentioned is the death cert for Elizabeth in 1931 It lists a John Bannon present at death.Ican find no records for him either.

possible clue to Elizabeth's first marriage.... a baptism in 1876 :

  Name: Thomas J. Murphy
  Parish: Rathmines RC
  Baptised : 6 February 1876
  Address : Donovan Lane
Parents : Thomas Murphy & Elizabeth Bannon
Godparents : Thomas Walsh & Sara Byrne
  see : link

not that far from the location of the second marriage. The birth of Thomas appears to be registered in Dublin South District with the middle name Joseph.

p.s. I think the 'Bt.' for mother's name on the marriage is short for Bridget.

Hi Shane
Thanks very much for that.I missed that record before and it looks correct Elizabeth married my great grandfather in Dublin but he and some of his family lived in Ranelagh at one stage-close to Rathmines.

The second marriage was to an Edward Cahill if that helps..

see:  Marriage of Edward Cahill & Elizabeth Murphy - 25 April 1888

(father's surname is transcribed incorrectly)

Hi Dathai
Her name was Elizabeth Cahill. She was buried in Mount Jerome. Its hard to tell if other members  of her family are buried in the same plot as its harder to search the Mount Jerome registers than say for example Glasnevin.I think its unlikely there are other family members buried with her .Her husband for example was buried in Glasnevin and her son (my grandfather) is also buried in Mount Jerome but in a different grave with other family members.I might contact Mount Jerome to see if they can search for others buried in the same plot as Elizabeth. Its a pity Mount Jeromes records are not online ad could be searched like those of Glasnevin.
