Can i order information from nli for births/ marriages etc or do i need to call into nli and order search.
....

The NLI dont do searches. You have to visit to carry out a search of the baptisms and marriage records, using the records on microfilm.
Remember to check the Resource boards :  Ireland, Dublin, Antrim & Cork (and stickies at the top of other county sub-forums)

Hi Ardree.

Painstown is now called Bestfield and is just outside Carlow town on the Athy Road.  It does adjoin the Oakpark demesne, in fact one of the exit roads from the demesne comes out at Lennons sawmills in Bestfield.   The original name recorded in the 1650s was Dunganstown.
The name changed to Bestfield after the Best family, originally from Knockbeg moved across the river and bought the large estate there.
Bestfield would definitely be in the Carlow Cathedral area for church records but I am not sure how far they go back.
Hope this is of some help to you.
