Helena Christina HERSE - Death Please
« on: Saturday 01 November 14 08:55 GMT (UK) »
Hi

We have been unable to find the death, and also the two marriages, of this lady despite exhausting the resources that we have access to.  So we now turn to RootsChat, in hope!

Helena Christina HERSE was born Galway, Saratoga, New York in c1875 to Heinrich Michael HERSE & Marie RASMUSSEN.
She firstly married Fred STANDHART/STANHART before 1898 as that was when their only child Christian STANDHART was born, in Gloversville NY.
Mother and son travelled to California in 1914 followed in 1916 by Fred who returned to Gloversville with Christian.  We must assume from that that there was a break up in the family.  Family stories say that Helena stayed in Los Angeles.
She appears in the US Directories in 1918 in LA as Mrs Helen STANDHART and in the 1920 census with the same name.
Somewhere she has linked with an Arthur (Art) KLEINE/KLEIN/KLINE but we can find no marriage.  That info comes from a tree on Ancestry.  However there is no sign of her as STANDHART In the 1930 census but there is, residing in LA, a Helen KLINE wife of Charles A KLINE.  The census shows her as born NY and parents born Denmark which is correct.
A family story says she ended her life in LA in a mental institution.

That is all we know and we hope that we can be assisted to find both her marriages and her death please.

Cheers and thank you

Hi

Charles Arthur Kline seems to be living at 2963 Ingledale Terrace in 1940 which is the same address as on the 1930. Charles is stated to be widowed.

Los Angeles A-L, California, City Directory, 1937 shows Chas A Kline (Helen C) 2963 Ingledale Terrace Charles is an  Agent for Washn Nat Ins. (Think these entries refer to the previous year so that would be 1936 for the last sighting)

So Helen could have died between 1936 - 1940

There is a Helen C Kline listed on the  California Death Index 1930 - 1939 - aged 55  ???
Date looks like 9/5/1938
The 70 refers to Los Angeles.  C A refers to the initials of the spouse.
So even though the age is out it does look like Helen C Kline.

The California Death Index record may include: Name of decedent
Initial(s) of spouse - Age (coded Units of Age)- Sex
County of death (coded by County and larger Cities) - Date of death.
Date of registration - State file number

In the Los Angeles Times on 11 May 1938, there is a death notice for Mrs. Helen C. Kline, which says "Mortuary, Forest Lawn Memorial Park Association, Inc. in charge."  No further information is listed.

Thank you Sandra & Shelley for your input.  The age issue is concerning us a little even though it does look like our Helen.  Even in the 1920 census when she is Mrs Helen Standhart she gives an age that makes her birth 1882.  Her age given in the 1930 census makes her born 1880 so I don't think she was sure or she was hiding her real age!?
The notice in the paper indicates that maybe her husband did not place it and therefore she died under somewhat strange circumstances?  I intend to follow up with the Forest Lawn organisation.

Thanks again

You're welcome.  I think this may be Charles Arthur Kline's WWI draft registration card - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KZVN-MLT and death - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VPDX-L6Y

A number of the death notices in the LA Times give limited information, so I don't think it gives an indication one way or another on whether her husband placed it or under what circumstances she died.  Some papers charge for an obituary, so maybe he didn't want to spend the money.

The information in the census could have come from anyone in the household or a neighbor, so that could account for the differences.

Hi Shelly & Sandra

Finally had a reply from Forest Lawn in LA.

The only info they have is that she died on 9 May 1938 aged 55 years 8 months and 29 days.  Also her cremated remains were shipped to Gloversville NY on 1 June 1938.  That sort of proves that it's our Helen as that is where she lived and also where her family lived.

Thank you both so very much for your help.

Cheers
