Maria is listed as married "Proprietor of Houses" with her are 3 children, one
is Elizabeth aged 18 born Stratford Essex.

That fits perfectly with one of the children, Elizabeth, who was 8 in 1841 and is in the house in West Ham with her brothers and sisters but no parents.

Children in 1841 are:

Emma 1823
Robert 1825
Elizabeth 1833
Richard 1835
John 1837
Alfred 1839

The 1854 death notice for Joseph in NSW refers to him as Joseph Moate senior...so there must be a junior http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/4802298

So it looks as if the family split, some going to Australia with their father and some staying in England with their mother.

Interesting - Maria's maiden name appears to be Moate, I wonder if they were related before marriage?

Thanks for your continuing interest and help. You have given me many paths to explore.

Getting back to my query as to the deciphering of the comment in the column alongside the children's names on the Census document. Surely it had to have some relevance to their situation, or otherwise it was a needless exercise to insert it?

In the 1841 Census 'Independent' often means they have some form of income, outside of an occupation being listed.

Could be a possibility.

Crowsfeet, thanks.

If Emma Moate at 18 in the 1841, and she is "Independent", hazard a guess as to why.
Father in Military?
Mother gone to Doncaster to look after sick relatives?
Father gone to Australia?

I have to stop or I will go bonkers.
Again, thanks.
