Can someone help?
« on: Friday 07 September 12 01:07 BST (UK) »
What it is, i'm trying to find the right ancestor, my great great grandfather.
In 1891 census it says he was born in 1868 in Garway Herefordshire.
In 1901 census it says he was born in 1864 in Skenfrieth.
And in 1911 census it says he was born in 1858 and is a Glamorgan Resident...

Which one is it!?
His wife is Mary J Baldwin

Baldwin (Newport, Wales)
Baker (Sark, CI)
Ducellier (Guernsey & France)

I think that Henry is the same man through all the three censuses! Maybe the last one he was coy about his age, lied earlier, or gave the wrong info for whatever reason. Have you looked for him in earlier censuses, his birth cert? baptismal record..........It's normal for a woman to be creative with her age.....but not men, but who knows!

have you considered that the other couple in no. 31 in 1891, also named Baldwin, may be related ? There is a Thomas Baldwin who could match on the 1871 census in Monmouthshire and he has an older brother Henry. It's possible Henry 'lost' a few years as his wife was younger than him.

I think you will find his baptism here http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~monfamilies/skenfrithprt.htm difficult to find, but there is a baptism in 1856 you will have to trawl through images

Sorry my go grandfather was Henry John Baldwin

I know that it is him in all three census' but trying to find a birth record as I'm nt sure what year he was actually born in or where. As its given, me three different places.

I did cop about the baldwin neighbours but not actually gone into it. Maybe I should.

I located the Baldwins that were living with them in 1891 in the 1871 census and found out that it is his brother, it says he was born in 1857 in herefordshire.

You may have found this already - Skenfrith.
Henry John Baldwin baptised 4th May 1856 the son of Daniel and Elizabeth Baldwin of this parish
Garway looks down on Skenfrith from the Herefordshire side of the River Monnow.

My family lived here at the same time and baptism's amd marriages are spread out across several parishes between Grosmont, Skenfrith, Garway, and Dixton on the edge of Monmouth, many lived where the seasonal work was.

Trouble is the parishes are spread around three counties and two countries.....England (Gloucestershire & Herefordshire) and Wales (Monmouthshire)

This page gives help with Monmouthshire families: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~monfamilies/mon_fh.prts.htm

And this page is really helpful for Forest of Dean families, which includes some Monmouthshire imports!

http://www.forest-of-dean.net/

You just have to spend time working out where the parishes are in relation to one another.
