You and me both Reiver!.  ;D ;D ;D.

That is a great shot and I am glad you put it on the site. as to the original question, well no man is an island. I call it the "treads of humanity", a philosophy a I have developed since I have been reading about social history,   and maybe distant cousin William wants to be found, maybe in a way they all do eventually.   ;D

A wonderfully clear and well illuminated picture of Ballast Hill, the Jubilee Home and the Norwegian Chapel next door.

Great, yes top right, the tree storey building, looks well maintained and the little chapel beside it.
There is the Ballast Hill road with a row of terraced houses a little further up.

Thanks for that one  ;) ;D

A very clear picture - thanks! Blyth must have been a very busy port in those days - perhaps the hostel was for seafarers too?
If Larsen was Scandinavian he is likely to have been a Lutheran, who were also into philanthropic projects.

My GG+ Grandfathers also sailed out of Blyth in those days, went as far as Russia sometimes.
Knott - Northumberland; Yorkshire (?Bridlington.)
Fenwick, Johnston - Northumberland.
Dixon; Hutchinson - York.
Shaw - ? Glasgow

That is an interesting link, I bet both our ancestors met many interesting people  ;D. I would like to find out more about this Larsen fellow, I tried to find out some thing about the history of Blyth, was the Jubilee Home bombed?, what happened to it, was Larsen a prominent member or the community?. If he remodeled Jubilee Home on the Rowton principle he must have been  well travelled and an intelligent and interesting man.

By, lass Russia!, that was some place to go!  ;D.

One of my cousins has researched this branch of the family and found that one of them was actually born in Russia.
What puzzles me is why a heavily pregnant lady would want to sail with her husband from Blyth to Russia to give birth?
Or is there another explanation?  ;)

What amazes me Tricia is what our ancestors did, what they endured and how well they got through it for whatever reasons they did it. Your story sounds heroic  ;D.

Stormie, Blyth was indeed a tremendously busy port with ships leaving it to go to all corners of the globe. There were strong links with the Netherlands, Noway, Sweden and all countries associated with the Baltic Sea. These days Blyth is less than a shadow of it's former self with all heavy industry gone.

I have recorded some memories and various bits and pieces about the place which you can read about here;

http://www.davidheyscollection.com/page83.htm

This subject matter about Ballast Hill will make it's way onto the page at some point in the future when I have gathered a few more bits and pieces of info together.

A book you might enjoy reading free, online is The History of Blyth by John Wallace 1869. That is if you want more info as to why your relative went there. Employment opportunity and all that.
