Paternity Bursary
« on: Sunday 09 November 14 15:38 GMT (UK) »
I recently discovered a relative in the 1911 census, a 68-year-old widow living in Ipswich, whose means of support was a paternity bursary. I knew she had been illegitimate, but this would suggest that her father was known and had provided for her in some way.

Can anyone throw any light on how these bursaries were awarded, and whether there is any register of   their provision, or other information on them?

Thanks.

Could you give us her name so we can find her in 1901 etc - or have you already looked there?
Google searches do not appear to be throwing anything up for anyone, as yet.

I think that what  the head of the household meant to write was  "Maternity Nursing".  :-\

It seems a rather odd thing to write; mind you, she was living with her daughter who had a 9-month old child at the time. Or would she be going out to work as a maternity nurse, at 68 years of age?
