George Spe(a)rman born mid-1700s
« on: Tuesday 24 June 14 13:15 BST (UK) »
My 6x great grandfather George Spe(a)rman was a ship carpenter who married Jane Tomlinson in Lancaster in 1784. He is supposedly from Liverpool according to a marriage record, but I can't find a birth for anyone with his name. Would someone be able to look for a possible birth, please?

Stephen :)

Hi Stephen,

Because George lived in  Liverpool at the time of his marriage -- it doesn't mean that he was actually born there. (unfortunately!)

What were the names of his children? Often (but not always) the eldest son would be named after the father's father.

Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

I found a George born in 1758 to a George and Susanna, but he was from Bristol so I'm not sure whether he could be a match or not.

Their children were, in order of birth - Mary, John, Ann and Margaret.

Have you found a burial record for George? It may give his age when he died and therefore help in narrowing down the year he was born.

Could this be your George? From Lancashire online parish clerks:
Burial: 3 Oct 1825 St Wilfrid, Standish, Lancashire, England
George Spearman -
    Age: 83
    Abode: Holland
This would make Georges birth around 1742.
There is also a burial for a Jane Spearman a few years earlier and also a Margaret Spearman(their daughter, age 23 in Feb 1821?)all buried at St Wilfrids Standish.
Burial: 21 Aug 1819 St Wilfrid, Standish, Lancashire, England
Jane Spearman -
    Age: 67
    Abode: Shevington
    Cause of Death: Consumption
Buried by: William Hodgson, Asst. Curate
    Register: Burials 1813 - 1825, Page 106, Entry 842

Burial: 16 Feb 1821 St Wilfrid, Standish, Lancashire, England
Margaret Spearman -
    Age: 23
    Abode: Shevington
    Cause of Death: Consumption
Buried by: William Hodgson, Asst. Curate
    Register: Burials 1813 - 1825, Page 125, Entry 996

Did their son John marry at Rufford? Not too far away from Standish so perhaps they relocated to Standish from Lancaster?
Hope this helps.

John did marry at Rufford, in 1809, yeah - his daughter Ann is my ancestor but for a while I thought her name had been Shearman, not Spearman. Thanks for the information, it does help.

The death of Margaret does match closely with the baptism in Lancaster in 1797.

Shevington would have been a sensible place for a ship's carpenter to move to, with plenty of work on Leeds & Liverpool canal barges.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

This looks like the marriage of their eldest daughter, Mary from Lancaster but married in Billinge
Marriage: 28 Mar 1802 St Aidan, Billinge, Lancashire, England
James Rothwell - Mariner, this parish [Wigan]
Mary Spearman - Spinster, Lancaster
    Witness: Elen Ward; Henry Chadwick
Married by Licence by: R Carr, Minister
    Register: Marriages 1799 - 1837, Page 67, Entry 268
Source: Original register at Wigan Archives

There is also a marriage license record of a JOHN Spearman to Jane Tomlinson in 1784 on the Lancashire Record Office website. Was George born/baptised as John and known as George or vice versa?

I'm not sure, but I did have a note on my tree saying that he was known as John sometimes, but I made the mistake of not actually recording why or where I got that information from, so I'm not sure if it is him or not.
