WILSHIN Catherine Josephine
« on: Monday 05 November 12 10:23 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace the birth of my grandmother who was born in Laurencekirk approx 1879 to 1880, I cannot find anything on the Scottish census. Her fathers name was Richard and he was a solicitor according to her marriage certificate of 1903 although he was deceased. Has anyone any suggestions where I can go next.

Hi topsybonny

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

Ah, I thought Wilshin was her maiden name. May be why nothing shows for me in searches.

Just searching with first names and possible place of birth, there is this entry in 1881:

Richard Gerty 45, Chelsea Pensioner 60 Rifles, b. Ireland
Mary A Gerty 37 b. Newfoundland
Elleanor M Gerty 15 b. Newfoundland
Lillian F Gerty 10 b. Canada
Alfred Gerty 5 b. Auchinblae, Kincardineshire
Catherine Gerty 3 b. Auchinblae, Kincardineshire
Fanny Gerty 10 Months b. Laurencekirk

Address: Johnston St Roslyn Cottage, Laurencekirk

By 1891, this family is in Grangemouth, Stirlingshire, father Richard is a School Board Officer. He still shows with this occupation in 1901. You have him as a solicitor, so not likely the same family (leaving aside the issue of the surname). I also don't think this Richard had died by 1903...

An uncommon name Wilshin. Tried searches as Wilsh* but still struggling with the name and birth place for Catherine other than the family above.

As Pam is also finding, can you post what you have on her so far. Where did she marry and who did she marry? Any witness names that can help with family names?

Monica  :)

So Sorry , Wilshin is her married name, her maiden name is WALSH. She married in Islington on the 8/8/1903 to Evan Wilshin , the witnesses were Ada Wilshin & Ernest John Tyler. She appeared on the 1901 census as a servant to a Doctor Ellwood living in Islington

Hi topsybonny

I am struggling, sorry  :-\ I am trying to look forward to then go back...and not getting very far.

I can now see the marriage in 1903 Islington. It isn't showing as linked so that is why I struggled to link it up. However, the Evan Wilshin marriage shows in 1872 when I search for it separately, in Islington with same refs, which doesn't help  :-\

1901 had Catherine as you say in Islington, born c. 1878 in Scotland.

Struggle with 1911 on the free searches, except for the one that I think Pam mentioned - from the free GR searches www.rootschat.com/links/0s2b/  except husband showed as John not Evan. Catherine is showing her birth place as Aberdeen Lawrencekirk from this free index?

Is this the correct entry for Catherine that Pam mentioned earlier?

I cannot see any births in Aberdeenshire/Kincardineshire as yet that would fit, nor any reference to a Richard Wa/elsh, solicitor by occupation in the area at that time.

Hard one  :-\

Hi Monica/Pam

Yes her children were  Catherine Doris & Gladys , and her husband is sometimes referred to as John (I think Evan is the Welsh equivalent of John).

I've been searching for Catherine WALSH prior to 1901 without any luck. ???

Can anyone find her on an earlier census in Scotland or England?
