Another indication of absence of marriage is that Honor's birth is alternatively indexed under surname Kerman.

I agree that the birth certificate will be needed for progress.

Would you think then that Mr Levy was agreeable to the registration?

The birth certificate might give him as informant  :)

If the putative is father is named on a birth certificate, then he has to be present at the registration?!

Yes, this became the rule once the 1875 legislation came into force.  The fact that the index contains alternative surnames for Honor tells us that the couple did not present as married.

You guys are way better at this than me, using grandmothers probate to work out if parents are married is pretty good.

@avm228 - thanks, weirdly ancestry could not find that from clicking on Honor and changing the surname, but with the standalone search it could. Still seem surprising you can register one birth twice.

I have not spoken to anyone who knew Victor so I have no idea about him really, but then my natural father left when I was just a toddler. One of the trees on ancestry looks very much like his, so I assume he knew when his grandmother (Lilian Levy) died, maybe they were not married and he never knew.

The birth was registered just once!
BUT it was registered under two names - so there are two entries in the GRO Indexes! ;D

It may be that Victor had a middle name which would help to eliminate.  It looks as though (as others have said) Honor's birth cert is required.  Do let us know if you get it.

I guess I would have to start with her marriage cert as there are 2 Honor Levys born in the same year in Lancs, I have no proof that the right one was selected already.

Might get lucky and have a full name for her father on there.
