QUOTE;
Gee Trish thats a lot of info ,Many thanks for all that.One thing ! In 1861 my William John would
have been 6yo, as he was born in1855

The 1861 Census is William John 1855's Father William George 1836 who Married Mary Jane CHARD 1854 :)

Sorry I meant William John was at Sea by the 1871 Census! My mistake.
1861 he was with his Chard Grandparents.

Following the Coplins back look at FreeREG
John 1808 has Parents JOHN/JENEFER.
He seems to have been Baptised John Pellow Coplin so Jane is likely nee Pellow.
If you get stuck give us a yell.

Trish :)

You could order his service records, together with that of his father from the National Archives. None will contain any family information, but by tracing the movements of the ships they served on you will get an idea where they were, and when. WJC has two records, one pre, the other post 1873.

Hi Martin.
Would the date range be a misprint for William John Coplin 11339b  ie 1853   1872,as he wasn't born till 1855.O does that mean something different?

His date of birth is 1855 (4 April 1855), but this series of records start in 1853, the year Continuous Service (CS) was introduced into the Royal Navy. The first series of CS records cover 1853 to 1873, then the next from 1873 to 1920.
