Info wanted: The Sandhill Inn, Colliergate, York

Hi All,

Just discovered, through a fortunate innkeeper namedrop in a bankruptcy notice in the London Gazette that my Innkeeper 6x Great Grandfather, Ralph Sedgwick, was landlord of the Sandhill Inn on Colliergate, York in and around 1773-4. Ralph was married to Tabitha Thompson.

I'm hoping that some York historians might know a little about the inn and whether the building is still standing. I'm guessing that my 5x great grandfather (also Ralph) was probably born there, as his baptism was only one year before Ralph sr is on record as being at the Sandhill.

Ralph sr died in 1778, and his widow married the butcher, Christopher Severs, the following year (twice widowed himself). They lived in the Shambles until Christopher's death in 1794. Tabitha and her son and his family both moved to Fulford sometime after 1802 and she died there in 1817.

Though interested in anything on the Sedgwicks or Severs, it's the Inn that I'm most keen to locate at the moment, and I'd love to have a photo or find it's still standing (could it be the Last Drop Inn?)

Hi just googled it their is a book called York's Historic Inns by Pete Coxon ref the Inn, mention of a Mr Sedgwick c 1770, the Inn closed c 1910.

Curious - I've done a fair bit of Googling and that didn't come up on my results. Useful to know when it closed (I knew it was still around in the 1800s). Perhaps there's a photo out there, even if the building is no longer standing

It looks as if the building is still there and is now a Grade II listed building. If you Google York Rifle Colliergate, which later bought the premises, it's entry on the English Heritage website should come up.

Just reread the EH entry and sounds like it's not the original building which is a shame.

Just wondered if you ever mangaged ot find a pictur eof the Old Sandhill Inn in York as I too am researching a family who lived there (the Reeds who were related to the Cawoods and must have owned it after your family). York archives don't seem to have anything in their image colleciton and wondered if you had had better luck?
