Orange Street, Canterbury
« on: Sunday 28 September 14 14:34 BST (UK) »
My daughter has just purchased a house in Orange Street, Canterbury. We can trace the occupants at that address from 1841 onwards. Would records be held anywhere that might give a clue as to when the house was actually built? Her small back garden is very overgrown and yet to be cleared but the neighbouring property has very old gravestones propped up against the wall. Is it possible to discover if this land was once used as a cemetery? I am finding it very difficult to pinpoint which church is nearest to Orange Street.

Thank you Claire, I also found this but I still can't work out which church is nearest, it may be that the church no longer exists. A trip to Canterbury Archives might well be the answer.

The churchyard of St Alphege Church, on the corner of St Alphege Lane and Palace Street (the church is now closed and used by The Kings School)??

St Alphege has an L-shaped cemetery at the church which may be seen from the road. Access is only possible with permission from The King's School.

There was once an 'overflow' cemetery round the corner in King's Street.

(depending on which side of Orange Street she lives!)

Thank you Tony. I don't think it could be that one as my daughter lives on the left if you come down from Palace Street.
