Do you already have the newer census info for this couple? I wondered as you have put an alternative birth place for him which does not appear on the 1881? ( 1881 has Middleton, others have Middlestone)  In 1891 he is with his wife Jane. By 1901 he is widowed and he dies later in 1901.
As he has such a distinctive surname you can search on free bmd for his death.
