Elizabeth Esgate b c 1766 Suffolk
« on: Sunday 02 February 14 19:31 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for any info regarding Elizabeth Esgate. I know she married James Bass (or Barse) in Whepstead in 1794. The parish records state she was "of this parish" & the 1841 census records her as being born in Suffolk but have been unable to find any birth records. She died in 1850. Can anyone help please?

Hi Melfordgal,

In the Suffolk Burial Index (Ex SFHS) there are two burials;
15-3-1850 Elizabeth Bass (84) buried Whepstead St.Petronella giving a possible year of birth as 1776.

13-5-1855 James Bass (83) abode; Bury St.Edmunds, buried Whepstead St.Petronella giving also a birth year of about 1772.

If the Elizabeth Bass (above) is the one your looking for, then there are two possible entries;
Elizabeth Susan Eastgate bapt. 4-6-1772 Methwold, Norfolk d/o Elizabeth

and

Elizabeth Eastgate bapt. 12-3-1773 Tuddenham, Suffolk d/o William & Mary.
These two entries have been extracted from the "Births & Christenings 1538 - 1975" on Anc...y

Hope these help.

Thanks Alan. Wonder how true the 1841 census is. If that can be believed, the Tuddenham birth is most obvious. Will check it out. :)

Hi,

I think you will find the 1841 census rounded the ages down/up by 5 years. The following censuses were more reliable by giving "actual ages" if they knew how old they were to start with. Sometimes
I found they very correct at other times it was just a guess possible on the part of the enumerator.

Sorry Alan, I was thinking more of the fact that she's reported on 1841 census as being born in Suffolk rather than Norfolk.

Does anyone know if there's any way of checking if the Elizabeth born in Tuddenham is the same one married in Whepstead?
Thanks
