Freeman family from Shadinfield...millers
« on: Thursday 06 March 14 21:36 GMT (UK) »
My never-ending search for Suffolk's bygone millers is no closer to completion!

I'm trying to get details on Francis Freeman (died c1806/08/16).  He was miller at the time, only 40 years old, and the business was taken over by his widow (surprisingly common), and then son William in about 1820.

24 years later Charles Pierson was there.  Does anyone know if he was related to the Freeman family.

Any help would be great.

This could get complicated but here goes

According to the Suffolk Burial Index (non Christmas version) Francis Freeman died & was buried at Shadingfield 6 Aug 1806 age 49.  Noted as a husband & son of Thomas Freeman & Elizabeth late Darkins.

Elizabeth FREEMAN (of Beccles; widow; late Dawkins; age 66) was buried 19 Oct 1804 at Uggeshall.

NB:  Marriage Francis Freeman & Elizabeth Barnard (wd) 10 Nov 1794 Bungay St Mary.

I have looked for a Freeman/Peirson marriage nothing obvious in what I have but I did find this:

John PEIRSON of Rendlesham married Sarah DAWKINS 8 May 1772 Hacheston All Saints.  Could there be a connection between Sarah DAWKINS & Elizabeth Darkins/Dawkins mother of Francis Freeman only trouble is Hacheston is some way south of Shadingfield but not an insurmountable distance. I found  a John Peirson buried 31 Jan 1811 age 61 Halesworth & widow of John (no name unfortunately) buried 7 Mar 1811 age 71 Halesworth.

This looks like your Charles Peirson:   Born 4 Dec 1812, Bpt 7 Jan 1812  Weston son of Benjamin Peirson & Ann Gent (This couple married 21 Sep 1804 Shadingfield & are both buried there Benjamin 27 Nov 1833 age 54  & Anne 7 Feb 1844 age 63)

So Benjamin Peirson was born c1779  were his parents John Peirson & Sarah (nee Dawkins) if not who were they??  Perhaps someone else can help you solve that one?  Closest thing I can find to a link.

As an aside I also found this in looking Nicholas Dawkin (Miller) buried 8 Aug 1664 Halesworth St Mary in case you haven’t come across him yet.

K

Ps The name spelling varies PEIRSON/PIERSON/PEARSON

Once again, thanks!

It is complicated, and I'll need to read it over a few times, but I agree I think there is a connection vis the Dawkins family.  I'll need to plot this all out and then dig deeper.

Cheers,
Pete
