Tasmania has set up a very good site for genealogy, including digitised images of many records.

http://www.linc.tas.gov.au/research/browse-by-category/familyhistory

A Name Search is on the right hand side of the page.

The permission to marry 1852 gives Charlotte's status as 'free', and no ship of arrival given.  Unfortunately the only image I could find (at a quick look) re the marriage gives no details of Charlotte's past or family.  (Sorry real life is in the way of genealogy this morning  :( )

There is also the Family Links site which I note has your man on it; however no children seem to be listed - again, only a cursory look  :(

The record shows he was granted Ticket of Leave 14 Feb. 1854 and was recommended for conditional pardon in April 1858.
It also confirms his native place as Shepton Mallet, Somerset.

Just speculation, but one of the marriage witnesses, Mary Ann PASS may have been Mary Ann JEROME who married Thomas PASS and arrived as a free immigrant in 1851 on the Australasia.

There was a Charlotte SMITH who arrived on the same ship but the manifests give no place of birth/origin.  Charlotte was contracted to work for a Capt. MILLAR at 28 Campbell Street.

A belated thanks for all the info. Yes Sidney seems to have been a bad or naughty young man. He might of died in his thirties, still trying to find proof of this.
