George Arthur West WW1 Record
« on: Sunday 02 November 14 17:14 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

A member of my family has joined Ancestry and having trouble finding a war record for an ancestor of hers.  He is George Arthur West born 1896 Manor Park, London, who died 3/11/1917 in Gaza, Egypt.  I have found his cert on the WW1 war graves but she is unable to find his actual war record.  What should she be looking at?  She says there is a family tree/album on there but she can't access it.  Maybe it is private I don't know.  If there is a record to be seen and someone can tell me that then I will go to the library and look at Ancestry for her.

Thanks

Speller (Thaxted, Prittlewell, West Ham), Thompson (East Peckham, Romford), Wright (Gt Marlow, Romford, Dagenham, Queensland Australia), Cutler (Herts), Channer (High Wycombe), Baker (Romford, Ilford, Stratford)

Hi...I can't see an army record for George Arthur West or campaign medals...over 60% of WW1 records were destroyed by fire in WW2...The tree on Ancestry that I looked at doesn't give any Army Service records.
Maybe someone else can find a match....Do you have his Parents names?

Yes father was Alfred West and mother was Elizabeth.  They lived in Manor Park.

A few more snippets which may be of use:
His original army number indicates he joined the army somewhere between Sep 1913 and 7 Aug 1914, ie before the war started.  The 4th Bn was part of the 54th East Anglian Brigade -  http://www.1914-1918.net/54div.htm gives a good overview of what he would have been involved in.  I note the grave register only gives his mother's name, presumably his father had died by then?

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.
