On his attestation when asked the question had he served in the armed forces before he answers no, so the man standing who is from one of the Scottish Regiments isn't him. He has service stripes & as Alan & Ady says the SA medal ribbon.
The maximum age for service overseas was 45 as far as I know.

John Jnr. was in the RASC which is a 6 pointed star & crown & the cap badge doesn't look like that so not him.

His protection cert. says he was born 1867.
I can't see a birth cert. for him so he might have had a job proving his real age but once your in your in for good.
As you know from the census he was a labourer prior to joining which confirms the standing man is definitely not him.
Considering how many service docs. survived your lucky to have both father & sons.
As this photo has been kept in the family one would have to conclude that the man seated is John Henry Snr. & a young looking 50 which probably accounted for why he had a job convincing the recruitment Sgt. of his real age.

Wow thanks all that is very interesting and a great help, I can now see that the man seated could well be 49/50 years old my great grandmother his daughter lived to 81 and had jet black hair still at 81 maybe she got her genes from him in that respect. Thanks again for that, he was only 5 ft 3.5 inch's tall too, you can see even though seated he is only short. Do you think the man standing is his sergeant? He was arrested in 1917 for being awol could this photo be something to do with that?
