Decipher the writing on this medal record please......
« on: Wednesday 19 November 14 10:17 GMT (UK) »
Hi, Could anyone please decipher the writing which is against my granddad's name - Thomas E. Bonney, and tell me what it means.  I think the very last part looks like - Police delivered by hand??

My granddad was a Farrier in the Royal Veterinary Corps.

Thanks, Diana

It records British War and Victory Medals Returned [ref:]  RV - [Return Voucher] B/178 [the number of the voucher] - then the date: 23rd August 1938. I don't know what the next string of letters/numbers signifies - probably some internal reference - then the note about the Police - which to me suggests that either his medals had been found and handed back to the Medal Issuing authorities for them to deal with - or that they had sent them back to your granddad via the Police.

Does your family still have the medals?

Hi jds,  The medals of my maternal granddad are not in the family.  I don't remember ever seeing them.  Thomas Bonney died in 1925, age 40.  It was not related to any war injury though, but very sad.  You have got me wondering what all that is about, in 1938.  I know that my grandmother moved from London to Lincolnshire in 1940 ish, because of the bombing.  She became housekeeper for her two batchelor cousins, as all her children had left home by then and she was on her own.  I don't know anymore than that really, so it is all a bit of a mystery.
Thanks for your help.

Maybe the medals were stolen & returned to the MOD by the Police, the MOD then issuing a return voucher.
