Casualty list 1st day of the Somme 1916
« on: Tuesday 02 December 14 11:14 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

My grandad was Robert Casey. Pte 6371 Kings Own Scotish Borderes,
recently i was very kindly sent the casualty list for my grandad being wounded early days
of the great war in France, he appeared in the Scotsman 21 st November 1914.

My grandad when he recovered was sent to join the 1st Batt in Gallipoli,
after the campaign was called off he was sent back into France for the Somme offensive,
he fell badly wounded again 1st day of battle, wounds to left leg, i beleive he was brought back to the UK and was admitted to a hospital in Liverpool { no name } then a Hartlepool hospital, he was discharged from army due to his wounds 1918.

So sorry if its a big ask but could any one help with any of the details of hosptials
and casualty list in papers, from the 1st day off the battle of the Somme.

Many thanks ;)
Derek
ps my grandad Robert Casey died 1939, we his grandchildren never saw him or know what he looked like, the year before he died he joined the Old Contemtable association. :'(

Re the list quoted by Jomot dated 9 8 1916  in the Times.

In my opinion (and of many others) there is usually a gap of around 4 to 6 weeks from event to list publication (maybe a touch less in 1914). The list is quite a large one and, given the family lore, could quite easily be that of the opening days of the Somme. If the family lore says he was wounded that day then I'd say this list supports that.

Just to clarify, Derek & I have been corresponding off-line and the date of 1st July is definitely correct (although a later record states 2nd July).  The timing of the publication doesn't seem to follow a particular 'pattern' though as I also have a soldier wounded in the first few days of the Somme but he is on the casualty lists dated 22nd July.

Edited: Although I guess the 'pattern' is there is a delay!

;) Thanks for help folks, perhaps you could help me with another question,
when my grandad Robert Casey was wounded for the first time with dum-dum bullet
according to his words from his hospital bed { Sunderland Royal Infirmary admitted 17 Oct 1914 }
where would any hospital records if any be archived from the Royal Infirmary.

All the best to all.

The pattern that I and others have found through studying/comparing the lists to surving records etc is that there is usually a delay of 4 to 6 weeks. Your example of one on a 22nd July list, in the event that there is a record showing he was wounded earlier in the month, shows why I use the 'usually' caveat.
