Hi again
I was going to just send you this by e-mail but thought that I'd put it up for others who might be trying to help or who may come later ~
I still don't see how John took the name Furguson prior to 1937. On everything that I've found so far, in Scotland and Ontario, he is down as Grant. Are you sure that the John on the name change document was him?
The Ferguson that I've mentioned comes from Margaret Mundell's mother's mother who was a Janet Ferguson when she married.
On Catherine's death cert, 1924, Belleville, her parents are given as John McCaterane and Mary (DoB 8 July 1856) and John's as John Grant and Catherine McEacheron (DoB Nov 14 1846, Inverness) I think that their son, William, John jnr's brother, might have got the info a bit mixed up!
John's marriage 1906 - Catherine's maiden surname is McKechnie
Donald's marriage cert 1913 - Catherine's maiden surname looks like McKetherian
William's marriage cert 1915 - Catherine's maiden surname looks like McEatherian
Hector, the nephew, who is with John and Catherine in Thurlow in 1911 ((Thurlow, Hastings East, Ontario - Dist 79, Sub-D 19, Page 8, Family 80) is with his parents in Glasgow in 1901

Hector Grant, 46, saw maker, b. Islay, Argyll
Annie, 43, b. Tollcross, Lanarkshire
Jeanie, 22, blouse maker (?), b. Tollcross
William, 20, saw maker, b. England
Kate, 16, blouse finisher(?), b. Tollcross
Hector, 16, saw maker, b. England
Thomas, 4, b. Glasgow
(This family in Barrow in Furness in 1881 RG11/4289/22/42. Some info is slightly out but it certainly looks like them with Jeanie down as Ganey)
Hector, snr, matches the Hector who is on the 1861 and 1871 (previously mentioned - Reply # 4) in Kilchoman and then Maryhill, Glasgow.
I'll keep trying to find anything else but the trail is look a bit 'bricky' for Catherine at the moment. Do you have details of John's sisters' marriages - Maggie, Kate, Mary, Annie ?

Hector Grant left Glasgow for Montreal (en route for Belleville) on 14 July 1910 on bard the Ionian. He is down as a saw maker, aged 25, single.
On his marriage cert 1914 (wrongly indexed as aged 22 but actually 32 in the body of the entry) he is down as born Barrow in Furness, England (as the 1881 census) but religion is Roman Catholic - cf. Prebyterian on the 1911.
