Hi again

I was going to just send you this by e-mail but thought that I'd put it up for others who might be trying to help or who may come later ~

I still don't see how  John took the name Furguson prior to 1937. On everything that I've found so far, in Scotland and Ontario, he is down as Grant.  Are you sure that the John on the name change document was him?

The Ferguson that I've mentioned comes from Margaret Mundell's mother's mother who was a Janet Ferguson when she married.

On Catherine's death cert, 1924, Belleville, her parents are given as  John McCaterane and Mary (DoB  8 July 1856)   and John's as John Grant and Catherine McEacheron (DoB Nov 14 1846, Inverness)   I think that their son, William, John jnr's brother,  might have got the info a bit mixed up!

John's marriage 1906 - Catherine's maiden surname is McKechnie
Donald's marriage cert 1913 - Catherine's maiden surname looks like McKetherian
William's marriage cert 1915 - Catherine's maiden surname looks like  McEatherian

Hector, the nephew,  who is with John and Catherine in Thurlow in 1911 ((Thurlow, Hastings East, Ontario - Dist 79, Sub-D 19, Page 8, Family 80) is with his parents in Glasgow in 1901

1901
144 Graeme Street, Glasgow
644/5 27 14

Hector Grant, 46, saw maker, b. Islay, Argyll
Annie, 43, b. Tollcross, Lanarkshire
Jeanie, 22, blouse maker (?), b. Tollcross
William, 20, saw maker, b. England
Kate, 16, blouse finisher(?), b. Tollcross
Hector, 16, saw maker, b. England
Thomas, 4, b. Glasgow

(This family in Barrow in Furness in 1881 RG11/4289/22/42. Some info is slightly out but it certainly looks like them  with Jeanie down as Ganey)

Hector, snr, matches the Hector who is on the 1861 and 1871 (previously mentioned -  Reply #  4) in Kilchoman and then Maryhill, Glasgow.

I'll keep trying to find anything else but the trail is look a bit 'bricky' for Catherine at the moment.  Do you have details of John's sisters' marriages - Maggie, Kate, Mary, Annie ?

gnu

Added -
Hector Grant left Glasgow for Montreal (en route for Belleville) on 14 July 1910 on bard the Ionian. He is down as a saw maker, aged 25, single.
On his marriage cert 1914 (wrongly indexed as aged 22 but actually 32 in the body of the entry)  he is down as born Barrow in Furness, England (as the 1881 census) but religion is Roman Catholic - cf. Prebyterian on the 1911.

Found a marriage on the OPRs that might well fit for Catherine's parents:

4 March 1830 - Bowmore, Argyll

John Maceachern and Mary MacArthur

According to Hector Grant snr's marriage cert in 1877, Shettleston, Hector's mother was Catherine, maiden surname, Ferguson. Father was William Grant, This is confirmed by the birth entry for William Grant (14 Nov 1860, Kilchoman)

I think that William got the info really wrong on John and Catherine's death entries in 1924, Belleville!

Also, given that William said his father was b. Inverness when all info points to Islay, maybe this thread is really a bit too far North  ;D

Hello! Catherine McKechnie & John Grant (aka Ferguson) are my Great-Grandparents.

Would like to make contact with those researching Catherine McKechnie & John Grant.
Haven't been able to find a birth/baptism for Catherine due to the spelling of her surname. Apparently, there are over 200 name variations of the surname MacEACHARNA.
Cheers.

Hi! Catherine Ferguson & John Grant are my Great-Grandparents.
Can you please tell me if/how you are related?
Are you a descendent of John their son?
Their daughter Margaret is my Grandmother.

Great-Grandfather used the surname FERGUSON back in Scotland but I don't know why. Sorry I can't help with that.
Cheers

I am trying to find information on Catherine McKechnie who married John Grant or Ferguson.
I know they went by the name Grant.  However their son John did not change his name from Ferguson to Grant until 1937.
Catherine and John had the following children that I know of. John, William, Donald and Margaret.
John(their son) was born in 1879. He married Margaret Stella Mundell in July 1906.
I do not know the reason for the name change.

Thanks for any help

Maggie Grant, age 14 on the 1891 census is my Grandmother.

Hi Abydos

Do you have Catherine and John on any of the censuses and where did you get the Ferguson name change from?

On son John's marriage cert in 1906 (Glasgow), they are all down as Grant (Catherine m.s. McKechnie). John Snr was a distillery worker.

The only family that I've found that  fits this  in 1891 is in Glasgow:

486 N Keppoch Hill road, Barony, Glasgow
District 644/6 ED 76 Page 7

John Grant, 46, Distillery Labourer, b. Kilchoan, Argyll
Catherine, 35, b. Bowmore, Argyll
Maggie, 14,
John, 12
Catherine, 10
Donald, 6
Mary, 4
Ann, 2
Alexander Campbell, lodger, 20, distillery labourer, b. Bowmore
Norman Campbell, lodger,17 -do-, b. -do-
Elspie Campbell, lodger, 13, b. -do-

Grant children all born Glasgow

and in 1901

33 Bardowie Street, Maryhill, Glasgow
District 622/1 ED 29 Page 3

John Grant, 60, labourer in Distillery, b. Islay, Argyll
Catherine, 48, b. -do-
John, 22, stillman in Distillery
Kate, 20, cotton weaver
Donald, 16, labourer in distillery
Mary, 14, cotton weaver
Annie, 12
Willie, 9

All children b,. Glasgow

I can't find a marriage between a Grant or Ferguson and McKechnie at the moment.
