Smith
« on: Wednesday 28 December 11 08:33 GMT (UK) »
William Smith born London 1847, married Emily Hawton around 1872 in London. I understand from William's death certificate his parents were George and Elizabeth Smith (nee Duffin). William emigrated to New Zealand (age 27) - I assume after marrying Emily. At some point William was left a widower, but believe he and Emily may have had one or two sons. I am unsure if this were the case as to whether they were born in the UK or NZ. William's second marriage was to Helena Roberts (three or four years before they actually died. They had three children while in their relationship. Would appreciate any information at all. Thanks

The NZ Passenger lists on Familysearch have the following. Is this your William

Scimitar, arrived Otago 26 Dec 1873
SMITH, William, 26
SMITH, Emily, 23
SMITH, Wm Henry, 4/12
They were from Surrey and William was a labourer

There are a number of children born to a William and Emily SMITH in NZ from 1876.

William does not appear to have married Helena ROBERTS until 1925

Hello Eyesee, The story I have at present is that my g grandfather was William Smith. He, after living with my g grandmother and having 3 children, they finally got married 3 or 4 years before they both died in 1928/1929. I suspected that they only lived as man and wife because I could not find a marriage record. Eventually I did find a marriage to my g grandmother in 1925 and it also confirmed that William had been married before (in London) to a Emily Hawtin. I do not know if they had any children in the UK or NZ. Emily had obviously died because the marriage certificate states William was a widower. I have yet to research Emily and the Hawtins, but my mother who is 83 wanted me to do her mother's side of the family. William, calculated on the dates I have, emigrated to NZ at the age of 27 around 1874, but have yet to find confirmation to this. I am not sure if Emily died before he emigrated or she came with William.  Unfortunately due to earthquake damage here, there is not too much I can find out at present. William lived and died in Christchurch. Thank you so much for the info you posted for me. Pauline.

Eyesee and Rosie..Before I head off to bed I would like to thank you both for all of the info posted. You have both helped me immensely. On William's death certificate he was listed as a carpenter. I understand now that William and Emily had a son together and my g grandmother and g grandfather (William) had 2 daughters. This now makes sense of the little info my own mother could remember. My grandmother always said she had a half brother. She looked after William and Helena (Ellen) when they both had to be cared for and when Helena died, William the son, took care of his father for the last 5 months of his life. Once again sincere thanks. Pauline
