1891 Census look up request
« on: Saturday 06 September 14 23:52 BST (UK) »
Can you lovely people please help me find my GG Grandfather on the 1891 Census - I'm not sure if he is missing or if I just can't see the wood for the trees!

Thomas George Goodison / Goodman Birch
Born 1849 in Whitby
He moves to Leeds before the 1861 and then is in Durham (the workhouse) on the 1901.
He is a French Polisher.

Many many thanks in advance.
Jo

I  don't think it's a work house  either ,    the  occupants are   usually  called' inmates'  if  it were a workhouse

Thank you for your replies.

He dies in the workhouse in 1903 so I presumed this is what this was on the 1901, maybe not yet but one step away  :(

I have all the other censii and his wife on the 1891 - its just the elusive Thomas who I cant find.

I do know that he spent 7 days in Wakefield prison in 1898 for being drunk and disorderly in Rotherham though  :o

Do you have his DC, who was the informant, I have feeling that Thomas and Maria may split up

The informant on the DC was the master at the workhouse - I agree with you, I do think they split and maybe alcohol was a factor in that :(

I don't know anything about the profession but it surprised me that a French polisher died in the workhouse!
