Regiment
« on: Monday 07 April 14 08:54 BST (UK) »
William Francis Fredrick Davis married my 1st cousin 1x removed on 20 April 1924 in London. On the marriage certificate it said his profession was soldier, is there any way I can trace his unit and rank. I believe his brothers were also in the army.

Did he serve in the great wat 14-18?

His record will still be in MOD archives you can apply for a copy there is a £30 charge and a few months waiting list.

Hi Mary

I would not tell the MOD that you were a first cousin once removed and by marriage. As you are not even a distant next of kin. They do sometimes accept only full name and DoB. Normally they will want his seven-digit army number.

You always have to supply a death certificate. Although if he did service in WW1 even the MOD will know that the last one to serve had died.

Hi
This may be a long shot; I am looking for a regiment for Edward Butler born 1844 London.
All the information I have is from census and free bdm. He was married in Portsea 1868, his first son Charles William Butler was born in Cork in 1874 the next son Albert Butler born 1877 in Chichester Sussex then back to Portsea for the rest of the family. No census for 1871 but the 1881 has him as a Boot maker of an Army Pension.
 Long I know

Hi Jeff

Could be the 35th Regiment, Royal Sussex. They were in Portsmouth and Cork at the right time  - although you need to give the month of his birth as they were not in Cork all year. After 1873 they formed a Brigade Depot with the 107th Foot in Chichester.

They were in Newcastle for the 1871 census.

If you do not have it, you should try and get the birth certificate for the son born in Cork. The Irish GRO only charge four Euros for it on plain paper, and it should give his regiment.
