Looking for any information about his arrival in WA ,
Believe he may have arrived on ship "Star of New Zealand which arrived on Nov 4 1914 in Fremantle. Have seen all records on national archives...
Does anyone have access to passenger lists please?

Some background info to help other RChatters help you.

From the NAA online digitised document, barcode 747334, 15 pages, List of Aliens against whom orders have been issued :
John Valentin ENGSTROM was in Perith, was Swedish, and his Aliens Certificate was No. 02585   (there's some dates on those lists, seems to be about 1920)

Here’s the live link to the main search page.  Search as a Guest.

http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/search/index.aspx

So he was likely Swedish by birth.    Can you give any further info about him?   Age, occupation etc.

Cheers,  JM

From Trove,

It seems the Star of New Zealand was a liner with the A & A, and arrived at Adelaide, from New York on Monday night (16th November, 1914) and was to remain there until Saturday night, when the passage to NZ will be resumed.

http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article159109632 Daily Commercial News and shipping List, Sydney 18 Nov 1914.

So, confirming that The Star of New Zealand arrived at Fremantle 4 November 1914.  It was a steamer, under charter to the American and Australian line, discharging cargo in Fremantle.  NO mention of passengers disembarking in that newspaper cutting.

Was you chap a seaman?

Cheers,  JM

Seems to be carrying cargo across from the US (New York) via Capetown.   That route would likely have become less well used as WWI progressed.

No mention of passengers.

TROVE references confirm that it was a cargo ship, not a passenger ship.  Perhaps an enquiry to the WA State Archives might find something http://www.sro.wa.gov.au/archive-collection/collection/passenger-lists-and-immigration-records

Hi aussi-girl

I think I have found your John Vallentin Engström here in Sweden.

http://www2.ssa.stockholm.se/Bildarkiv/Egenproducerat/SE-SSA-0809/Barnhuspdf2008/09_11196.pdf

This document is for a Josef Valentin Engström born 9 March 1896 in Klara Parish in Stockholm as an adopted child. His mother Jenny Amalia Engström gave him away at birth. This document records all his movements in Stockholm.

I am having trouble though finding him after 1905 at the moment to prove that this is him. It looks as though he didn't like the name Josef.

I will get back once I find him.
It would be interesting to know what you think.
