Great deduction, thank you Lizzie! Certainly as far as I know they were not wealthy - they all worked in the motorcar industry in Coventry.

It has to come in useful somehow eh? I was there, just, 10 months old on VE day so only experienced sweet rationing etc.

I did think think the toppers were a bit OTT. So that groom is most likely Mr Macauley. I have emailed the priest at what was probably their church offering a donation to the restoration fund in exchange for any information in their records.

That's not strictly true, Josey!
I wasn't born until 1953, and had a ration book?

Ah yes, true I just mentioned one thing; I remember 'weaving' a ration book cover at school when I was about 6 [1952]; also had an ID card [still got it actually - it's part of the family archive  ;D]

There only seems to be this child of the Cilfford/Murray marriage:
Birth
Oct/Nov/Dec 1913
Coventry ref 6d 1431
Leonard G Clifford
Mums maiden name Murray

Lizdb - could you tell me where you got this reference from, please - I think I will order this certificate. I looked on freebmd & ancestry for this birth & also downloaded the whole Clifford pages from the GRO index Dec quarters of 1913, 1914 & 1915 & couldn't find it.

BTW Still awaiting the Macauley - Doherty 1938 marriage certificate.

1932 death certificate of Leonard G Clifford aged 53 received today & confirms the suicide. Now to hunt for the report of the inquest held 26 Feb 1932, the day after the death.

Thanks, Josey.

Well, how weird!

I would have got it from the gro index, and on Ancestry website .... But I too have just looked to recheck it, and like you, cant find it!
Am I going totally round the bend, or has it disappeared? Surely it cant have disappeared - so what on earth was I looking at when I thought I'd found the above?

I really am at a loss to know what has happened, but if I have gone completely loopy and am seeing things, I do apologise!

Aha - think I have worked it out - and yes it IS me going mad.

The ref I have given is that of the Marriage of Leonard G Clifford to Kathleen B Murray
(that you already have in your first post)

So profuse apologies.
There is no child.

Thanks very much for checking - it's so easy to do.

I think I am veering towards the official/unofficial adoption but will wait to see what the marriage certificate shows; due for despatch tomorrow.

I have located the inquest report for Leonard - it's at Warwickshire County Records Office & available as it is more than 75 years ago. Once I've been to Coventry [from Yorkshire] to look at the newspapers to see what there is about Leonard's & Mary's deaths, I shall decide whether to go.

Just because I can I am posting a photo of May!!
