Tenor Joseph (McLaughlin) Locke
« on: Friday 12 September 14 20:04 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me with the family history of Joseph McLaughlin - the famous Irish Tenor who went by the name of Josef Locke

My grandmother (herself a McLaughlin) always insisted they were related in some way. Sadly she died in 1976 and I have lost my source of information.

Regards

"Born Joseph McLaughlin, on March 23 in 1917 in  Creggan Terrace, Derry, Northern Ireland. He was the son of a butcher and cattle dealer, and one of nine children."

Thanks everyone for your replies

The only thing is, to connect him (or not) to our family tree, I need his parents, grandparents etc. Everything I have found so far is on Joseph himself and his wife and children etc.

Where will I find his parentage

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FBBC-SPP

might be his birth though registered in the next quarter after his birth which was late March.

There are 7 Cattle Dealer families on 1911 census in Londonderry his father possibly unmarried at this stage could be among them,if you were to take  a gamble on the above cert it may point to one of them, but as i say a gamble.

Hi,
I went through a similar process as dathai but included butchers as well as cattle dealers and came to the same conclusions. There was one butcher, Patrick McLaughlin, aged 20 years, living in Lower Road, Londonderry. This address is close to Creggan Road and Creggan Street. It will be a gamble.

It's a pity that the articles don't name his parents isn't it.

We used to love him in our family. I remember seeing him at our local theatre- waving our hankies to 'Goodbye'.  :)
We used to play guessing games- no television- and one was initials. No one could guess mine - J F.   My mother and older sister laughed so much when they had to give in and I said proudly, 'Josey Flock'  :D

I hope you find a connection.

Joseph McLaughlin born 23 March 1917 was the son of Patrick McLaughlin and Annie Frances Doherty, who married in Derry in 1902 (see reference below, but information corroborated by searching the RootsIreland website indexes as well):

http://www.historyireland.com/20th-century-contemporary-history/from-the-files-of-the-dib-3/

Here they are in 1911:

Edited to add: The RootsIreland website search index also indicates the following children to this couple after 1911 (in addition to Joseph): Bridget McLaughlin 1912; John Redmond McLaughlin 1914; Peter Brenden McLaughlin 1918.
