Inmates of workhouses
« on: Sunday 11 December 11 09:20 GMT (UK) »
Hello
I have just discovered that a female relative and her 3 children were put into a workhouse. They lived in Monasterevan and i do not know which workhouse they would have been sent to. This happened in 1901. Is there any way of finding the names of workhouse inmates, when they entered and when they left?

Thanks
Kidja

People were usually sent to their local workhouse so Monasterevin is in Athy Poor Law Union. Kildare County Library would be the place to check with http://kildare.ie/Library/KildareCollectionsandResearchServices/

There is some more information here http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Athy/#Records

Yes, this is correct. People from Monasterevan went to Athy Workhouse - one of my relatives died in the workhouse in 1905 and he was from Monasterevan.

Census 1901 on National archives site
Try keying First letter of name and surname, you may be able to find result, especially if you have their ages and denomination

On census forms all inmates held in Jails and workhouses were recorded with their initials.
