Bachmann, died in Bremen
« on: Monday 23 March 09 19:15 GMT (UK) »
I have just got a snippet from the New York Times:

New York Times, 4 November 1926:  Obit:
..... 2, at Bremen, Germany, Mary, widow of J C Henry Bachmann, daughter of the late Captain William C Thompson of New York, in her .. year.

Can anyone help with more information about these people please?

Jean

Dear Jean
To obtain a death certificate for Mary Bachmann you would need to contact
the Standesamt- basically the registry office. In Germany civil records are not centralised.

I assume her death would have been registered in Germany as she was married to a German.

http://www.bremen.de/sixcms/detail.php?id=335132

the above is the website for the Standesamt - you will see the email address starts office etc

I would recommend you write in German. I am sure a kind RC member would translate an email if you drafted one.
You would need to provide a date of death- age if you have it and your relationship to the person

Hope this helps

Thanks very much Sue,

I will try this office and see how I go.     However your comment:

"I assume her death would have been registered in Germany as she was married to a German"

may well create another problem - yes, she was married to a German-born man, but he had lived in the U.S.A. for forty years or so before taking out US citizenship and within about ten years returning to Germany, where he died and she had lived for about 20 years.  [She herself was born in England and went to U.S.A when a young lady.]

It's really getting too hard ....

Thanks anyway

Jean

Hi Jean
The chances are the death was registered in Germany.
She certainly would have needed to be buried here- unless the family was worth a fortune and could have her repatriated. I think unlikely given her husband died in Germany.

It is possible the Stadtarchiv for Bremen holds some cemetery records. The grave would have been long gone- they do not usually remain after 20 to 30 years but a record is kept.

This website will give you the email address.

How old was Mary when she died in 1926? Do you know where in England she came from?
Bit more info and more can be found out.

Have you obtained her US naturalisation record?

Don't give up on this one....
