Yes he is elusive prior to marriage isn't he  :-\

I wonder if he got his birthplace wrong.  There are more Walmsley names in Lancashire but I can't find one with father Thomas an iron foundry worker.

There doesn't seem to be a birth registration for a James Walmsley around 1844 (ish) in the Sheffield area.

I wonder if he was illegitimate - and his surname was Clifford? There is a James Clifford born in Chorlton, Manchester in 1844 --- and strangely -- if you look at Genuki for details of Bradford (Manchester) -- it is adjacent to the Sheffield - Manchester Railway!

It's pie in the sky I know-- but maybe his mother took up with a Thomas Walmsley before James married -- just a thought!
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

No sign of a father in the 1851 census - just Catherine and 5 children, although she appears to be registered as married.

By 1861 James and two of his brothers are in Derbyshire - no sign of Catherine but other family members have appeared.

Cant find him yet in 1871.......
