Robert RIDER : Convict to NSW in 1837 ?
« on: Saturday 19 April 14 19:18 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Robert RIDER/RYDER is my 2nd ggfr who was baptized at Barrow-upon-Soar, Leicestershire on the 8th June 1800 the son of William & Mary.

Thanks to help from the folk on Leicestershire Rootschat  I now know that :
 - in 1837 he was Transported to NSW on the "Asia".
 - in 1851 a Ticket of Leave was issued for him.
 - In 1869 a notice requesting his whereabouts was published in
the NSW Police Gazette dated 19 May.

This last states that he was last heard of at Boyd Town, Twofold Bay, NSW on 13 Nov 1848;
and he may have gone to the Victorian Gold Fields.
Information was to go to the Inspector General of Police.

Please can anyone assist in tracing his activities in Australia ?
Did he marry again ? leave any descendants ?
When & Where did he die ?

Looking forward to your comments ?

Your chap would be a bit too old in 1889. Could this possible be a son? grandson?

His ticket of leave for the district of Queanbeyan was issued in 1846 and cancelled in 1851 because he was absent from his designated district.  Unfortunately if he had absconded then it is likely that he changed his name.

I wonder if he is any relation to my William Ryder b. 1808 Middlesex, (Parents William and Mary) who came to Australia with other family in 1849 (perhaps a family member already in Australia tempted them over with talk of gold - could be Robert?).  My William and family then moved to New Zealand in 1854.  Maybe Robert also ended up in N.Z.?  (Not very scientific, and probably a long shot - but just another idea).  There was an old family 'rumor' about someone in the family being sent to Australia after stealing a loaf of bread, but I don't know who or if actually factual!

Welcome to RootsChat,

Gold Rushes to the Colonies commence in 1851, so Gold Fever talk was not the 1849 lure.   California had the 49ers  :)

Absconding in 1851 .... well, yes Gold Fever may well have been the lure at that time .... and as Dundee has noted,  a change of name can be part and parcel of that.

Re your William RYDER arriving in 1849 .... may I please ask which colony ?

Cheers,  JM

I'm afraid all I have about the Australia arrival (from research compiled from other older family members) is : Arrived 1849 • Australia - To Mine Gold at Ballarat and Bendigo

Regarding the NZ arrival there is a lot more information.  The family arrived 1854 • Nelson New Zealand (Traveled in Cabin No. 2 aboard the "Eagle").

Quite a bit of information on this branch of the family can be found here:http://ryder.gen.nz/h.htm

My personal line  comes from this same branch, but the Ryders who put together this website seem to have remained down South around the Nelson, Tasman areas, while my more immediate ancestors moved North to Hawkes Bay, Manawatu and Wellington regions.  :)

Announcement of the Discovery of Gold in New South Wales appears in the Sydney Morning Herald of 2 May 1851.   http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/12926747 and of course in the SMH on 29 April 1851 http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/12926665

Ballarat Gold discovered August 1851 ….

Bendigo Gold discovered Nov 1851

According to this, William came to Australia for a time then returned to England where he married and then went to NZ.

A William RYDER, aged 18, a carter from Middlesex, arrived in 1849 on the ship Labuan.

Hi,

My Robert RYDER/RIDER was born in Leicestershire; and although his father was named William there does not seem to be any connection to the London area.

Thanks for asking though.

Cheers
