I would say more likely delayed by lack of available funds and more pressing political & financial issues, even if the required legislation was passed.

the most recent exchange on the 1926 census I can see on the Dáil Eireann website is from June this year :

Written Answers - Census of Population, Wed 6 June 2012

extract '...Legal advice has been obtained in relation to the legislative changes and consultation with relevant bodies is in progress. Possible technical approaches are also currently being considered, as are their resource implications. I intend to bring a Memorandum to Government on this matter in the near future....'

1926 census

I have seen several sites stating that there was legislation to have the 1926 census released by 2016. I received an e-mail from Census Statistics Office & it appears that the change of the 100 year rule is dead. The office stated 2026 is the release date.
Very disappointing as I will either be dead or mentally unfit to continue my research.

Dear Roger,

Thank you for your query regarding the Historical Census.

1926 census information will not be made public until 2026. The 1926 census
was held under the Statistics Act 1926 which meant that all information
collected was purely for statistical purposes and could not be divulged to
any person or organisation.

The Act was subsequently repealed by the 1993 Statistics Act. One of the
provisions of the 1993 Act was that the guarantee of confidentiality would
be lifted in the case of information provided for the census after 100
years.

The Act had retrospective effect which implies that the records from the
1926 census are confidential until 2026 - 100 years after the census.

I hope this is of assistance to you.

Regards,
Jenny

The 100 year closure is the current situation, but it is hoped that new legislation can be enacted to override this. This has not yet been debated or voted on by the government.

The matter of financing any release or digitization has not yet been discussed.

For those with NI links, the 1939 National Registration Act, which introduced identity cards to the UK population on the outbreak of World War 2, was effectively an instant census taken in September 1939.

This link has more information on accessing the information gathered in 1939 towards the bottom of the page, but be warned, it is not straightforward or cheap, and you may have to provide death certificates for the people that you are researching.
