Any info on Caroline Madell's settlement papers?
« on: Thursday 17 July 14 15:24 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for settlement papers for a Caroline Madell, daughter of John and Hannah Madell.

Caroline was born in 1812 and christened at Old Church, Saint Pancras, London.

According to a comment made on my Ancestry family tree, Caroline died in 1832 followed shortly by her 9 month old daughter Mary Ann Randall.

Can anyone help?

Hi

Do you have reason to believe there were settlement papers?

Presumably these are the burials you refer to?

Worship Street, Finsbury (Baptist)

24 March 1832: Caroline MADELL, 20, A21, unpaid.

(& next entry)

8 April 1832: Mary Ann RANDELL, daughter of the aforesaid, aged 7 months, vault.

Ayr: Barnes, Wylie
Caithness: MacGregor
Essex: Eldred (Pebmarsh)
Gloucs: Timbrell (Winchcomb)
Hants: Stares (Wickham)
Lincs: Maw, Jackson (Epworth, Belton)
London: Pierce
Suffolk: Markham (Framlingham)
Surrey: Gosling (Richmond)
Wilts: Matthews, Tarrant (Calne, Preshute)
Worcs: Milward (Redditch)
Yorks: Beaumont, Crook, Moore, Styring (Huddersfield); Middleton (Church Fenton); Exley, Gelder (High Hoyland); Barnes, Birchinall (Sheffield); Kenyon, Wood (Cumberworth/Denby Dale)

Hi,

Yes. Someone made a comment on my family tree about Caroline's parents' marriage. I had no information about John and Hannah Madell's marriage.

They said according to Caroline's settlement papers, John Madell and Hannah Cook were married in Ipswich on Dec 1803.

I just received the marriage record for John and Hannah from Suffolk record office.

Caroline's settlement papers would confirm that her father John, born in London, was the same person who married her mother.

Regarding the infant death of Mary Ann RANDELL, I do not think you can safely infer that "daughter of the aforesaid" means daughter of the immediately preceding person.  See e.g. this series of entries in the same register:

17 May 1826: Elizabeth WICKE, daughter of John & Hannah WICKE, aged 3 years.

(next entry)

19 May 1826: Benjamin FULLER, son of the aforesaid, aged 28 years.

(next entry)

4 August 1826: Henry LAST, son of the aforesaid, aged 19 days.

Thanks AVM.

I noticed that. I was curious about the last name Randall.

If Mary is her daughter, I wonder if Caroline was unmarried at the time because I can't find a marriage record for her. She was only 20.

What does the word "vault" mean after Mary Ann's death entry?

What does the word "vault" mean after Mary Ann's death entry?

The she was buried in a vault (probably beneath the main level of the church) rather than outside in a burial ground.

This is pretty interesting.

The person who left a comment on my tree about Caroline Madell's settlement papers is a voluntary transcriber with the World Archives project on Ancestry.co.uk. The record I need is in the soon to be released Shoreditch settlement papers, so I am looking forward to seeing this record set.
