Headstone Photo Request - Delves of Sussex
« on: Thursday 15 July 10 02:12 BST (UK) »
I hope I'm not being presumptuous, but ... if anyone happens to be wandering churchyards in Sussex, particularly near Catsfield, Hollington, Dallington, Waldron or Worthing, ... with camera in hand, ...

Would it be possible, should you find any Delves graves, that you might snap a pic or two for me, please, and send me a message, or a PM?

Huuuuuuuuuge thanks in anticipation; -  I'm in Australia, and unlikely to be able to visit any of these places for myself.

Cheers
Deb

Hi Deb,
Sorry I can't help with photos (I'm also here in Oz), but I'm also researching Delves in that area. Would love to compare notes.

Hi Marion, good to hear from you!

My OH's family are descended from a John Delves, b. 1819, who sailed out here on the "James Pattison" in 1839/40.  He came from Sussex, and I've found a number of people named Delves in the county ... including the vicar who married the parents of John Delves' two wives!

It might be better if we could carry on talking by personal message ("PM"), but you'll need to post another two "public" type messages before the PM facility will work for you.

Cheers
Deb

Good to hear from you, Deb. As you've noticed, I'm new to Rootschat. My grandfather, Harold Delves, was born in London. So far, with some help from another cousin, I've got back to Thomas Delves, bc 1725 in Sussex, who married Hannah Parker in Lewes in 1746. I'm doing a mini one-name study, trying to connect all the Sussex, Surrey, Kent & London Delves. Big job, but I'm really enjoying it! As your John left England before 1841, I haven't yet got him listed.

I'll see what else I can post, so that I can qualify for the PMs.

Quick hello, then. I have to get some other work done at the moment. I'll be back on later this afternoon.

Hi

On my way to Battle earlier I stopped off at Waldron & Dallington and had a wander round the churchyards.

Dallington is small and most of the headstones are very old and illegible, of those that were legible I found no Delves.

Waldron is bigger but some of it has been left to overgrow and is now a "conservation area"! I did however find a recent headstone there bearing the name Richard Harvey Delves, who was born in 1934 and died in 2000 - don't know if that helps any?

Hi Bev, and many thanks for letting us know about this one.  Not sure as yet how he might be connected - Marion and I might have to confer, I think.  Will post here again, should we find him in either of our trees :)

Cheers
