Hi Penpen,

I have looked at the census reports. In 1871 and 1881 Hannah's place of birth changes to Faulkbourne (which is near White Notley).
Free BMD gives the birth of Alfred Joseph Cole in Colchester in Dec 1863 and in the same quarter the death of Harriet Cole (death in childbirth ??). In 1865 in Colchester FreeBMD shows a marriage of William Cole to a choice of two ladies one of whom is Hannah Challis. Looking for a Hannah Challis in the 1851 census there is one of the correct age born at White Notely. This could be your answer ?

Kind regards
Mike

I like the sound of that theory! Will order the death cert to see if that gives me the answer. :)

The theory sounds good but why is she called Hannah in 1861  ???

Good question but I do not think we will find the answer. Most likely a mistranscription from original notes to the actual census. Easily done if the handwriting is bad (I should know - done it myself on more that one occasion).

The wife of the couple listed above William Cole on 1861 census was Hannah. Maybe he/she wrote down, mistakenly, Hannah instead of Harriet Cole and then William really DID marry a Hannah later on?

Alfred Joseph Cole's birth certificate would confirm that Harriet is his mother  :)

Just to let you all know....Harriet Cole nee Tyler died 13 Nov 1863. Cause of death...Childbirth/Scarlatina. So she was the mother of Alfred Joseph and then HIGHLY likely that William went on to remarry Hannah Challis.
Thanks everyone.
 :)

That was a very useful death certificate   :)  Glad it's sorted.
