I am collecting information on Saunders family members in Norfolk and have over 6000 on my database.  Happy to exchange information and to receive any snippets to add to it.  Still a long way to go but I am continually adding to it, any help gratefully received!

Hi,
I have a friend married to a Saunders & living in the Wymondham area. Don't know if they are relevant but it may be worth researching that area as Robert Saunders comes from there.
Happy Hunting.

Hi Brian,

I am doing some research on the War Memorial in Earsham, Norfolk. There is one LW Saunders listed in the WW1 section, and listed on a plaque in the village hall as Leonard W Saunders in the 9th East Surreys.

The trouble is, that is where the trail runs cold. No other websites, including the CWGC list such a soldier. The closest I have come up with is a Private William Saunders, 2293, 9th East Surreys, 3rd Sep 1916, Serre Road Cemetery No2. XXXIX. C. 15. I cannot find anything else about this Private William which would link him to Earsham or Norfolk/Suffolk.

Do you know anything about either of these?

Hi NickM437
Welcome to RootsChat. ;D

Looking at the 1901 census index, there was a Leonard W Saunders (age 9) born in Earsham.

http://www.1901censusonline.com/results.asp?wci=person_results&searchwci=person_search

See result page 51-60.
I do not have access to the 1901 census, but another rootschatter may be able to give you the details.

There is a Leonard baptised Earsham here :- http://www.rootschat.com/links/01e4c/
Parents marriage :- http://www.rootschat.com/links/01e4d/

regards
yokel

There is a Leonard W Saunders in the GRO War Deaths :

Leonard W Saunders died 1918 , G5318 Private East Surrey Regiment vol 1. 68 p 165

His medal card states PD ( presumed dead ) 21/27.3.1918

He is not listed on CWGC as far as I can see.

I also found this Memorial Inscription :

In affectionate remembrance of William beloved husband of Jemima Saunders who died April 13 1914. Also Leonard William youngest  son of the above killed in action in France Mar 24 1918 aged 26 years.

This fits with the family on the census at Earsham.

You have beaten me to it, my notes say that the memorial is on the right of the path near the church under a tree!  William was married twice I think, Jemima was his second wife (nee Kett) married 6 Oct 1880 at All Saints Earsham I have other information if you'd like to PM me Nick.
