The service records for anyone serving after 1920 are still with the MOD.

See: https://www.gov.uk/requests-for-personal-data-and-service-records

Cost is £30, unless next-of-kin applies.
More details on that web site.

You need to ask the MOD!

As far as I know it's next of kin - which would br your Great-Uncle's children?
Your mother isn't related to him directly - only through marriage.

As a Great-Niece, you might have to pay the £30.

Hi

As your great-uncle died more than 25 years ago you would not need permission of next-of-kin but it would cost you 30 pounds. The fee is only waived for widow or, if service person was not married, their parent.

If you go back to your previous thread about your g uncle, you will see that a relative of one of the other men killed on the same flight has replied to your thread. Some great information was provided on your this thread from 2008 which I don't know if you saw as you did not reply to it.  :-\

If you contact this person, they may be able to identify their ancestor in your photograph if this is something you are interested in.
