Beresfords Lanarkshire Scotland
« on: Thursday 07 April 11 09:45 BST (UK) »
Hi,

All I know is that my great grandfather Samuel came from Ireland as a baby. Born around 1860.His parents were John Beresford, born 1827 and mother Helen Jane Beresford nee Gemmell born 1830, both born in ireland. My parents and other older relations are now dead so can't tell me anything. i've just been digging around. My mother used to tell me that brothers came over, and think his name was William. They settled in a village called Glenmavis, by Airdrie, Lanarkshire Scotland.

does any of this ring a bell with anyone?

Hi Soapy1

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

Not easily seeing the family's 1871 census entry, but is this them in 1881 in New Monkland:

John Beresford 54, labourer b. Ireland
Mary Gamble 54, sister in law b. Ireland
Samuel Beresford 22 coal miner b. Ireland
Thomas Beresford 15 Apprentice Blacksmith b. Glasgow

This looks like a possible birth for Thomas on IGI:

Thomas BERRISFIELD b. 23 April 1865 in Springburn, Lanarkshire, parents John BERRISFIELD and Helen Jane GAMBELL

The birth cert for Thomas should show date and place of parents' marriage (this information was included from around 1863 on Scottish births certs). It may give you a clue as to where in Ireland the family may have come from.

On IGI here www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true, there are entries for the births of some of the children to John and Helen (Ellen Jane), under the surname of Berrisfield:

1. Hugh Berrisfield b. 26 March 1851 Skeagh Dromore, Down, Ireland - actual extract from records
2. Samuel John Berrisfield b. 6 March 1859 Skeagh Dromore, Down, Ireland - actual extract from records
3. Eliza Ann Scott Doake Berrisfield b. 13 MAR 1861 Skeagh Dromore, Down, Ireland - submitted entry

There is a submitted entry for parents marriage on 12 April 1850 in Dromore, Co. Down.

1871 now, as transcribed. The original image would help to confirm the details:

John Benisfield 45 b. Ireland
Max Benisfield 45, sister b. Ireland
Hugh Benisfield 20 b. Ireland
John Benisfield 18 b. Ireland
William Benisfield 16 b. Ireland
Samuel Benisfield 12 b. Ireland
Mary H Benisfield 7 b. Glasgow
Thomas Benisfield 5 b. Glasgow

Address: Airdrie & Gartmillan Rd West Side Of Glenmavis

Daughter Mary's birth entry shows on IGI under the spelling of BARRASFIELD, b. 5 July 1863 in the High Church area of Glasgow.

Mother Helen's (Ellen) death entry would likely show on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk between 1865-71? This should include her parents' names to let you work back a generation for her. Father John's death cert, if he remained in Scotland, should also give you the info you need to work back on his line.

Monica, thanks...those are the correct Beresfords, but as far as i know there were 2 lots in Glenmavis, where i came from. There was a John Beresford who was a pipe major, who had a son of the same name. They were my mum's cousins.
My gran married a John Nathaniel Burnett.
She had quite a few brothers and sisters..Helen Jane (ka Nell), John, Daniel, Bella (probably Isabella), Samuel, Jessie Bell Watson.
My gran always stayed in Glenmavis as did my mum until she died.
Trouble is Biblical names were very popular so different branches of the same family used them.
I don't much paperwork...the things I had were stolen a long time ago.
Funny thing is that they never spoke about Irish side!!

Hi Soapy

Looks like you have start from the begining again (although not quite the beginning as you already have lots of info) and document your research along the way.

Is this your gran with family in 1901 in Glenmavis:

Samuel Beresford 41, coal miner
Elizabeth Beresford 44 b. Scotland (well, that doesn't help!)
Bella Beresford 18
John Beresford 16
Daniel Beresford 14
Ellen J Beresford 12
Elizabeth R Beresford 10
Hugh G Beresford 8
Samuel Beresford 6
Jessie B W Beresford 2

Perhaps your mum's cousins were children of the John Beresford who shows above in 1901 aged 16?

yes
Monica, that's my family alright...I signed up at ancestry so got back to John Beresford being born in Ireland. but nothing else.
Just found it odd that none of the irish ones were ever mentioned but it might just be a 'village' thing.
