Hello, Jay.
Thank you for your reply.
It was good to read that you had been to Rumleigh and Bere Ferrers.  A lovely part of Devon.

Hi, Jayson.
You may well have moved on from your Rumleigh/Bayley postings, but I have only just noticed them.

I had been looking at ROBERT TUCKER PAIN (1840-1942) to do with my local history work on Exmouth, Devon.
Robert's first wife was EMMA BAYLEY ( m.St.Margaret's Church, Westminster, 1870). She was the daughter of James Bayley, Williston Hall, Cheshire, and Rumleigh, Beer Alston,Devon.

Robert was an artist, but from a wealthy family. Together they were selfless in the time they gave to charitable and "good" works in Exmouth.
Emma died at Ryll Grove, their fine house, Feb.22nd 1898.

That may not add much to info.on Rumleigh, but I thought the Emma connection might be of interest.

The Leighton Buzzard Observer and Linslade Gazette, 23 July 1901, carries a lengthy description of his marriage " ... in the presence of a very considerable congregation".
Thank you. I will see if I can retrieve that information.   Best wishes.

Family History Beginners Board / Frank Ernest Lloyd
« on: Wednesday 15 July 20 09:56 BST (UK)  »
Frank Ernest LLOYD was born in 1874,in Buckinghamshire, England. In 1901 he was assisting his father , who was a Postmaster and stationer. Ernest was 27 in 1901 and was also listed as "Photographer".

By at least March 1907 he had moved to Exmouth ,Devon, and had set up a photography business.  He had married at some point, as he has with him his wife and , I think, two children.
He had initial success and was commissioned for a number of portraits, some of which appeared in the local paper.
By March 1911 , though, the family had emigrated to CANADA. Frank was granted a small-holding.
Is there any information on him or his family once in Canada?
I wonder if he was able to keep up his photography?

Family History Beginners Board / Margrie. Emigrations
« on: Monday 26 August 19 16:27 BST (UK)  »
Looking for emigration data on William Margrie and his son Frederick.
William b.Shaldon, Devon 1828. Resided in Exmouth in his youth. Said to have emigrated to USA, no date though. There for about 20 years . He returned to Exmouth and first managed then bought an iron foundry until retirement c.1901.  Died 1910.

Frederick Margrie was born in 1865 in Exmouth. In the English census for 1901 he is married with 6 children, with a plumbing and bicycle-making and selling business.  There is a mention that in April 1903 he went to Canada. No other info.  By 1911, he and his family are again listed in the census.  It appears that the business had been kept going. By his wife, perhaps?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Family History Beginners Board / George Benmore Pentecost
« on: Sunday 07 July 19 13:48 BST (UK)  »
Researching the Exmouth family of Benmore, came across Thomas Benmore's grandson, GEORGE BENMORE PENTECOST b. 1857. He was living with his mother, Elizabeth, at his grandparents' house, 15 Beacon, Exmouth in 1861 and 1871, according to the census for those years.  In 1881 he is shown as a clerk , boarding in a house in Lambeth, London.  By 1891, still in Lambeth, he has married : to Grace , and they have a daughter, Edith.  Most intriguingly, George Benmore Pentecost is shown as "WRITER".
Both George's grandfather , Thomas, and his uncle George Phillip Benmore were significant citizens of Exmouth; George in particular. [ In his earlier years as an architect, in 1852, he had been appointed to the staff of the great Penrhyn estate in North Wales at a time when the then owner was improving the conditions of the people of his estate - cottages, schooling etc. ]

Can anyone expand on George B Pentecost  WRITER ?   Did he and Grace have any more children after Edith (b. 1889)  ?

Family History Beginners Board / MARGRIE , Edmund marriage
« on: Thursday 07 December 17 14:13 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching Edmund Margrie, who was a photographer in Exmouth, Devon.
He was born March 3 1876.  Died March 1902 , aged 25.  I have found his own family but I am
having a problem finding his MARRIAGE.
He married in 1901.  I believe to Ellen Veal, or  Martha Ellen Veal. But this is proving very difficult to trace.  The date of the marriage is registered, but only in his name. No mention of his wife's details.
Edmund became ill early in 1902 and died very suddenly in 1902.  Buried at Littleham 27.3.1902.
I cannot find any information on his wife, either her surname before she was married, or after his death. As they were married for such a very short time, I am wondering if she reverted to her maiden name of Veal, or as is likely, that she married again.

I would greatly appreciate any information about her.
