Fife / Re: Fife Surname connections

Adrian - I have a John Taylor marrying a Helen Fife/Fyfe in 1784.  Their daughter is Mary, christened 1785 Dysart.  Mary went on to marry Lawrence Lennie in 1807 (Edinburgh) and are my 3xg grandparents.

I know Taylor is a common name (coincidentally my surname today) but thought I would throw it out there anyway.

Hi Tenspar

The Hannah Noble you refer to as the half-sister is my 2xggrandmother.  She was the 6th of 7 children born to John Noble (b 1800 Whitby) and Hannah Gatenby (b 1806).  Her dad died in 1839, and her mom is shown as a publican in the 1841 census, with her youngest children and a brother perhaps in tow.  I have struggled to find Hannah senior after this, so was pleased to see your notes on her subsequent remarriages.

Young Hannah is with relatives in 1851.  She married William Davison in 1860 and had three daughters by the time her husband was killed underground at Haswell Colliery in 1865.

She remarried a widowed coal miner later - last name Foster (I note one of your postings referred to an Alice Foster) - and went on to have a few more children and raise their blended family.  She was still alive in 1901 (census).

Her first born, Mary Ann Davison married Michael Ward in Durham, and they had 6 children (one of whom was my grandmother Hannah Ward) before she died in 1903 of pthisis.

West Lothian (Linlithgowshire) / Transcription query?
« on: Wednesday 02 March 11 02:04 GMT (UK)  »
I found an ancestor in Linlithgow, Abercorn Parish, in the 1841 census.  She would have been widowed right around this time and her husband was a blacksmith (whose death I have not found).

Since they married and were from Kinross I was surprised to find her here.  I am trying to understand the address on the census - Railway huts at ? - thinking this could give me some more clues.  Is it likely that a blacksmith would be working for the railway for instance?  I am afraid I am showing much ignorance of the profession in that era.

Thanks in advance

:)  But at least I now know where 'Cecilia' came from!  The only time that name had appeared until now, and I was actually wondering whether she really fit there.  (Mary Winton's mother looks to be Janet so no confirmed link there)

That's very kind and generous of you Graham.  I am hoping to get to Scotland before the end of the year, first visit, but it is a ways off.  No worries if you don't get the chance though.

Monica - according to his death certificate William's parents are William Brown and Cecilia Brunton.  I found their marriage in 1812 Portmoak.  Cecilia looks to be the daughter of John Brunton and Margaret Beaton born in 1791, and William the son of James Brown and Janet Disckson born 1787.  Or at least these are likely candidates so far.

I was looking at Margery Butters as a strong possibility too.  The date and location certainly fit.

Thanks for this Graham - do you know where these would be available? (my first experience with these)

Monica - yes I have a copy of an original baptism entry, and it shows William and Magdalene as parents (looks like Kinneston Portmoak?) if the correct Ann.   Magdalene Butters death certificate in 1891 has her son as an informant and sadly little info on her parents.  _____ Butters (ploughman) for father and mother "not known"

Osprey - thanks for that.  I was able to locate those, and a copy of her birth certificate. Can I ask how you found her originally?  I have found the SP search function to be a little frustrating - I don't want to complain, because the price is right (certainly compared to England) but I find it hit and miss sometimes.  I have often wondered why you can't search for post 1855 births by parents. I also have some folks who moved to a non-conformist church and although they are in "family search" data base there is no sign of them in SP.

Thanks for your input, everyone.  I think for now I will continue to work on the assumption that I have the correct Ann, and keep my eyes open for any resource that might confirm or deny a relationship to Mary Winton.

I have been coming back to this for a few years now, and getting a little more info each time (now the death certs for William and Magdalene, and Ann Brown Soutar).  I thought I would take advantage of all the expertise here to see if there was another angle I might be overlooking - as I said sometimes it is hard to see the forest for the trees:)
