Inverness / MacDonald deaths Skye (or possibly Lewis)
« on: Friday 24 August 12 12:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi folks

I have encountered a problem in trying to trace some people and am looking for any advice please.

One thing I have been unable to trace are a few of my own grandmothers siblings who died in infancy. Here is what I have.

My grandmother was one of ten children, the first four died in infancy. I am looking for children of Alexander MacDonald and Jane MacDonald (nee MacDonald). They married in 1919 in Croy, Inverness-shire but were both from Stornoway, Lewis. All their eight known children were born in Stornoway (Laxdale, Tong Bridge), Barvas and one in Snizort, Skye.

As they moved around a bit and the name being MacDonald it has been hard to trace, I did find two, they both died in Stornoway, one named Coll and another unnamed, premature birth. This leaves me with two more to find, I was told the first four died but I know that this is not completely accuarate as one was born and died after the eldest surviving child. I don't suspect they were born too late, as surviving siblings would remember them.

The two missing siblings would be born between 1919 (date of marriage but possibly born before marriage?) and 1939 (date of last siblings birth). More realistically they were born and died between 1919 and 1925.

Places associated with the family were Lewis, Harris, Skye (Snizort, Strath, Kilmuir, Stenscholl, Portree, Duirnish),Gairloch, Lochbroom, Lochalsh but unfortunately some branches moved further afield in Inverness, Ross & Cromarty and Sutherland but I suspect these two siblings died in either Skye or more likely Lewis.

Another factor is that the family never used what is the traditional naming pattern in Scotland of naming eldest son after paternal grandfather etc.

PS I have been to the Scotland's people centre and didn't have the info of the 4 extra siblings at the time, not in the country so another trip is not possible in the near future and I am afraid to look back at the amount of wrong Certs I have looked at on scotlands people website. As most people prob know the search indexing is abysmal.

Thanks for reading

Thank you very much for the info. I'm not sure to be honest if they tie in at the moment but one fact you stated might be relevant. One of John cockburns sons was a quarrymen and as you stated your George was a quarryman. This may not be important but I've only once came across a quarryman and it was johns son Peter. Who knows, I think my John had a brother called Peter from edrom who was a farm worker.

Thanks again, ive been stuck with him for a long time, if I make a breakthrough I'll post a reply.

Cheers

Thank you very much for your help elma. I know johns first wife was buried seperate from him in hownam, ROX. That's why I think he may be buried back in the parishes in Berwickshire I mentioned as he was almost certainly from there.

I know he remarried to a Frances Davidson so that might also help.

Thank you very much for your kind help. It narrows things down.

Hi Terrianne

many thanks for your work there, much appreciated. I have the death certs for all of her children and details of their marriages as well as locating them on all censuses. I suspect some link to Linton alright, as anne returned there on a later census.

I am fairly sure that the other hendersons there were her deceased husband George Hendersons brother and family, as like i said his eldest daughter was born in Wark, Northumberland and this Thomas Henderson was born in Carham, Northumberland (which i think is the parish covering wark).

I also think perhaps that either/both of george and thomas parents were from linton. I did get thomas hendersons death cert, he died in selkirk and his mother was named as Jane Henderson (no father listed). I found a birth in carham at the right time with the father named as Thomas Riddle and the mother named as Jean Henderson yet the son Thomas was given the mothers name of Henderson (which makes sense). All in all i suspect that these are the Henderson family but still stumped as to Anne Turnbull, as I have nothing to link her to Linton other than living there on two occasions.

I know from all censuses she was born in Coldstream but don't have a clue of any way to locate her father James Turnbull (soldier) although there is a chance he was fighting in the Napoleonic wars, I have a record of one james Turnbull from the war, with scant details other than 93rd regiment of foot. This could be him and may explain why there is little reference to him, anne or other turnbulls in coldstream records. As i said her mother's name is given only as Anne on death cert.

Anyway, sorry for boring you with all that but typed the first message on phone and made a hash of it. Hope that explains where i'm at a bit better.

Thanks again for the help, i think the linton connection is probably the henderson side. This is a line i had given up on at the very start and i think i may be right to have given up!!

Cheers

Berwickshire / Cockburn Yetholm Edrom

Hi a quick question regarding any possible monumental inscriptions for either edrom or bunkle and preston.

I have an ancestor who died between 1825 and 1841 in yetholm, John Cockburn and I believe he was born in edrom or possibly bunkle and Preston. He was christened in edrom. Anyway there is no headstone for him in yetholm. Just a stab in the dark but thought he may be buried in a family plot in either edrom or bunkle and Preston.
Does anyone know if inscriptions exist and even better, if possible, does anyone know if his name appears in either, he was a blacksmith at primsidemill yetholm.

Thanks for reading

Berwickshire / Turnbull Coldstream

Hi folks

Just wondering if anyone might be able to help me with the following as I'm completely stuck. My 4 x great grandparents. George Henderson and Ann Turnbull. I believe George was born in Wark, Northumberland for the following reasons:

Their first daughter being born in wark, Northumberland.
In later censuses living next door to other Hendersons in Linton, ROX who were born in wark.
I believe George was born there. He died pre 1841.

The reason for listing all this is I am hoping to gather more info on his wife Ann turnbull. I have her death cert where her father is named as James turnbull, soldier. Mothers name is simply given as Anne with no maiden name. She gives her birthplace on all censuses as Coldstream but can find nothing unless she was christened in another church. She would have been born c1792.

I wondered if anyone else is researching this family and if there are possibly any inscriptions for Coldstream, although she died 1871 in Roxburgh parish and have to check that out as well. She died a pauper so am not sure a headstone would exist or be in good condition to read anyway.

Thanks for reading.

Hi Gill

Thank you very much for your kind offer. It would be good to find a few. I sent them a quite a long list so they said it might take a while.

Thank you again

All the best

Thanks ann

I already emailed them and they are onto it. That'll will at least locate their burial lairs but ideally if there was a booklet of transcribed MIs for sale i would be able to view their inscriptions. Although who knows, at least when i have the correct cemetery and lairs i may one day get to falkirk to get the inscriptions.

Thanks for taking the time to help.

Cheers

David
