The Lighter Side / Re: Jedi Knight

Thought I should comment since I did the 2010 census.
As an American I should have known there would be no questions about religion on our census forms.
I kind of wish we did.  :-\  I couldn't put down Jedi if I wanted to.
(just out of curiosity)

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: DNA Testing - Why Not
« on: Wednesday 18 January 12 02:29 GMT (UK)  »
I tested with 23andme a few years back on their old platform, and I got it on sale, so I only paid around $115 with s&h.
I ordered two V3 platform kits when they were on sale, so with s&h those two only cost me around $15. They're just sitting though in my hopes of 23andme ditching that silly subscription fee.  :P

I'd totally upgrade if they dropped that monthly fee. I understand the reason for it, but I don't make that much and I have bills to pay and groceries and gas to buy.

Census and Resource Discussion / Re: Ancestral Books - how reliable?
« on: Tuesday 17 January 12 21:53 GMT (UK)  »
A book is only as reliable as it's sources and in some cases how much information said sources are willing to provide.   ::)

I myself am in a fairly recent ancestry book written by a relative of a relative. The book isn't on my own ancestors, so I'm kind of a collateral relative in it.

In it, it states that my Gran and Pop did not have any children of their own (correct) and that they raised 1 child - my mother (incorrect, they raised my mom and aunt).
*Also they fail to mention that my Gran is my mom's first cousin.
It also states that I went to a university. (I actually went to a nearby community college.)
*It also fails to mention my aunt's three children, my cousins.

Ah... family drama.  ;D Mucking up information everywhere.

The Lighter Side / Re: Family rumours have they turned out to be true?
« on: Tuesday 17 January 12 12:28 GMT (UK)  »
In high school, my Gran* told me that my Pop* was a descendant of Anne Boleyn.
She even had a book detailing the history of his family. (Although it was published before he was born.)

Turns out, in a way, she was correct. My Pop is a Shelton and is a direct descendant of Sir John Shelton and LADY Anne Boleyn, Queen Anne's aunt.

*My mom was raised by a first cousin and her husband, so while I am blood-kin to my Gran, she is actually my first cousin once removed (I think that's right), and I'm not blood-related (that I am aware of) to my Pop. So I personally cannot claim to be a descendant of Sir John Shelton and Lady Anne.

--------------------------------------

Well, I wasn't really told any family stories (complicated reasons as to why). My mom did once tell me we were part Italian, though I have found no proof of that whatsoever. Smiths are a nortoriously difficult bunch to trace anywhere in the world.

-------------------------------

Internet research produced two Cherokee 6th greatgrandfathers. One one my mother's side (Tommy Ellis) and one on my father's side (Vincent Tanner). I've done the DNA thing and my understanding is it can fairly accurately tell you what percentage of European, African and Asian (which includes Native American) you are, within 5 generations.
So it's just shy of my "Cherokee" ancestors, however, I came back as 0% Asian and .27% African. Point-27 is just about the right amount for one 6th ggf.
So it seems that one was flat out lying and the other was of African descent passing as a Cherokee.

The Lighter Side / Re: Naming Children
« on: Sunday 15 January 12 15:37 GMT (UK)  »
I have some more recent examples, although these aren't children named after deceased siblings.

My great-grandmother wasn't very creative when it came to naming three of her sons:
John Bill
William Floyd
Glenn Boyd
They all lived to rip old ages and none of them were twins.

Another great-grandmother, among her several children had two sons:
James Larry, who went by Larry and
James Edward, who went by (or goes by) Bob.
I have no idea why both are named James, or how in the world they got "Bob" out of James Edward.

My (half) sister and I have the same middle name, but that's because we have the same father (with the male version of the name) and our mothers named us. I think it's kind of neat, but we weren't raised together, so it's a bit different for us.

My father's side seems to be obsessed with my grandpa's name, Thomas.
We have:
my uncle: Thomas Joseph
My aunts sons: Alexander Thomas and Ryan Thomas
My little brother: Thomas Charles
My grandfather was named after his father Thomas S, and he his and he his father Thomas J, and he his.
I think it's safe to say that if I ever have a son, his name won't be Thomas. Enough is enough.  :P

The Lighter Side / Re: Birth Certificate Shock
« on: Sunday 15 January 12 08:57 GMT (UK)  »
My family had to send out for my birth certificate (born in another state) back in the late 90s when it was time to get my driver's permit.
I was a bit baffled as to why, when I had been known as A.M. surname all my life my birth certificate had M.A. surname.
So, for example instead of Anna Mary, it had Mary Anna.
In any case I got my permit (and now license) with the A.M. name. Apparently the DMV either didn't give a rip which version was on the birth certificate, or went by my social security card.

I found out later that I have a corrected certificate, but it has my mom's age on it wrong.

Ah well, can't win 'em all.

-------

btw for those interested, apparently there's a short traditions of first born girls being named after their fathers, so that's where my M name comes from. The middle name is after an ancestor that had passed some time before I was born and sentimental older relatives started calling me by my A name and it's stuck ever since.

United States of America / Re: Fisher and Douglas

It's my friend/cousin's family tree. I do not know who Mary's parents were. If the research is correct, then John's folks were George and Elizabeth.
