The John Garlick signatures on the 1820 marriage and the 1826 marriage are exactly the same.

Unfortunately there is no signature on the 1824 banns register to compare it with to ascertain if the 1824 JG/MA are the same people as the 1826 JG/MA.

This John Garlick was very difficult to trace.
There are about 4 or 5 John Garlicks in Hadfield, two are cotton spinners.
It took ages to separate the families.
But what i worked out is that my JG married Betty Lee in 1820 and had:
Mary 1821 & James 1823.
Then married Martha Ashton in 1826 and had:
John 1833, William 1835 & Thomas 1837.
To add to the confusion both Betty Lee and Martha Ashton had illegitimate children prior to marrying JG.
Finding them all in 1841 was a challenge.

The Martha Ashton who married John in 1826 was born in 1799 in Hadfield, Derbyshire.
The family appear in 1851 living Woolley Bridge near Hadfield.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Banns advice from 1824

Hello,
I was hoping someone has good knowledge of banns reading requirements and could answer a question for me about some banns from 1824.

I have found a reading of banns from St. Chad, Saddleworth on 30/5, 6/6 & 13/6 of 1824.
For the marriage of John Garlick & Martha Ashton, both of Austerlands in this Parochial Chapelry.
Trouble is I cannot find a corresponding marriage for this couple, which I am guessing should be late June 1824.
Is it possible they never married even though banns were read?

The curious things is though that we find two years later a marriage of John Garlick to Martha Ashton on 24th July 1826 at Manchester Cathedral. John was of the parish of Glossop and Martha of the parish and town of Manchester.

I'm guessing a bann reading was not still legal two years later.
Is this the same couple or a different couple with the same names?

Any advice or thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Chris.

Thanks Graham,
I hadn't noticed that but it's a very useful find.
Do you know of anyone who has compiled any of these Garlick family groups from Hadfield, Gamesley or Simondley?
I'd love to contact them and see what they know.
Thanks.
Chris.

Thanks everyone for your insight.
I can see 'Simondley' now, which I couldn't see before.
And I think the 1841 cross-reference proves it.
Appreciate all you help.
Regards,
Chris.

Derbyshire / Village name from 1851 census

I am hoping someone with excellent reading skills can read a village name in the 1851 census.
Here are the details:
HO107/2152/509 p 18
It is John Garlick, aged 61, living in Charlesworth, Derbyshire.
Ancestry have transcribed his birthplace as 'Sunwich', which I cannot find on a map.
Familysearch have transcribed it as 'Ludworth', which I know exists but to me it doesn't look like Ludworth.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Chris.
